The father-son combo continued to explore Canada today, more specifically we were in Halifax city centre today. The weather was still modest and extremely foggy, but according to the meteorologists it's supposed to get better tomorrow.
What do you do as a good tourist and Canada lover on a Saturday morning - right, you go to the Farmers Market on Saturday in Canada and we were at the oldest in North America as the sign readily informed us - since 1750. Farmers Markets are weekly markets where local farmers and artists offer their products, where you can eat something and, above all, where you can see and be seen and find out the latest information from the region. People know each other and talk like in the good old days - analogue. Yes, the digital native is amazed and the father reminisces.
After we had outed ourselves as Germans, we were able to get hold of a good loaf of natural sourdough bread and two pretzels - something you can't get in the supermarket round the corner.
We then visited the National Gallery of Nova Scotia. A gallery really worth seeing, especially with the permanent exhibition on the Canadian painter Maud Lewis.
The special exhibition by Michell Wiebe - Vampsites is a colour explosion of a special kind and casts a spell over you.
The highlight for me, however, is the permanent exhibition of the Miq'mak (First Nation) and their thoughts and philosophy about nature, man and spirit. I made a short film about it to better present my impressions.
Afterwards, we strolled through Halifax harbour and enjoyed the maritime atmosphere.
At the end of the day, we visited a seafood restaurant where my son savoured a lobster with excellent side dishes.
Tomorrow we will leave the Halifax area and make our way to the north of Nova Scotia.
To be continued...
