Gorgeous Sofia - exploring the gem of Bulgaria | 2023 February

in TravelFeed3 days ago

February 2023 found me bundled up in a scarf and boots, stepping off a plane into Sofia, Bulgaria - a city I’d barely skimmed in guidebooks but couldn’t wait to unravel.

Firstly, for a couple of days we were exploring the city, food and scouting the night life.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Why It’s Interesting: This iconic cathedral is one of Sofia’s most recognizable landmarks, with its golden domes and Neo-Byzantine architecture. It’s not just stunning—it’s a symbol of Bulgaria’s independence and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Balkans.

Being inside the Cathedral lifts your soul. Such a special place.

Ancient Serdica Archaeological Complex

Why It’s Interesting: Sofia’s Roman roots come alive here with ruins of the ancient city of Serdica, uncovered during metro construction. It’s free to visit and blends seamlessly with the modern city.

Stepping past Roman streets while locals rush by - very surreal experience.

Christmas trees were still there. Lights at night were very special.
So after couple of days, we decided to explore the nearby mountains. It was definitely a great decision! Will never forget those views, and for sure will come back there one day!

On the way up, there are some special places. Like this monastery. We had lunch there.
View of Sofia from our climb.
Snow starting to appear, becoming colder.
From this point on, weather becomes very harsh. At some points we were really struggling with the wind.

This part was the hardest. Wind was very strong and it was very cold. After some time we really wanted to find a shelter for some rest, but the one we found was already occupied... It's difficult up there in winter time.
Walking down was a bliss. Coldness slowly going away.
We found a waterfall, so cool!
Climbing down was not that easy. In many parts you have to be careful to not fall down. But that makes it fun! You feel like in survivor type of movie 😁
After climbing down, we went to a local restaurant for some food and drinks and finished the evening listening to amazing local musicians performing in a pub.
Overall, we had a blast! Sofia is a special place, with amazing nature, awesome architecture and great food. It's also not that expensive. Would really recommend. Will come back there one day for sure!

The mountain part sounds like a true winter adventure! Bet the harsh winds, snow, and the struggle to find shelter make it feel like a scene out of a survival film. But spotting a waterfall and then winding down with local food and live music at a pub seems like the perfect way to cap it off. Do you remember the name of the mountain you climbed? It sounds like a challenging experience. 🌨

It was very close to the city, you can even take city bus up there. Winter might not be ideal to explore tho, but was still very cool 😁 Don't really know the name, but you can see them from the city

Beautiful place, beautiful shots 🤞🏻
