What's Great To Have And What We Missed On Our Last Trip

in TravelFeed10 months ago (edited)

We want to optimise our luggage.

Our ultimate goal is to travel just with a backpack that can be taken as hand luggage in planes. Because the feeling is just amazing when you travel with small luggage. 🤩

The advantage of travelling with small luggage on a plane:

  • You can be later at the airport
  • No waiting time at baggage drop off
  • No waiting time after arriving on the luggage belt

Therefore we are constantly leaving out stuff we carried with us, we are reducing it in size and/or replacing it with other, smaller, lightweight items.

Here are our experiences we collected so far...

What's Great To Have With Us

  • Diffuse video light with battery or alternatively THIS light - can be used not just for video lighting, but also for creating a nice atmosphere in rooms with bad lighting
  • Big sun cap / hat - perfect for working in bright environments
  • iMoov Astuto stand - to work ergonomically in the plane, on the airport, on the beach etc. - I'm using it a lot. But it's quite heavy and clunky. I'd like to replace it with something with same functionality, but half of the size and half of the weight (maybe made from carbon).
  • Laptop stand foldable or alternatively THIS stand - work ergonomically wherever you have a table
  • Apple Airpods - small in size, great sound, noise cancelling, very portable, allows you to listen & talk even in noisy environments, blends out noises that annoy you (crying children in a plane, street noise, people talking near you and distracting you etc.)
  • 2 USB-C to USB-C cables (2m), 1 USB-C to lightning cable (2m), 1 USB to Lightning cable (3m), 1 USB to USB-C cable (short - for charging USB-C devices that don't charge with USB-C to USB-C cables)
  • 26000mAh power bank - 60W charging capability, enabled me to work the whole day without external power supply
  • AKG 240MKII headphones - although I needed them occasionally only and they are pretty big, the mixes I produce on them are just amazing.
  • 0,5l water bottle made of stainless steel or THIS alternative - can be refilled anytime, keeps water cold the entire day, even on the beach. It turned out to be important, that the bottle has a sling or a carabiner.
  • Drawstring bag - can be folded extremely small, but if you need, you can e.g. drop your backpack as luggage when flying and take the laptop, power bank etc. as hand luggage into the plane
  • Microfibre towel - small, lightweight and folds up big if needed. Additionally can be used as pillow or as seat support
  • Banana bag - stores all the stuff you need to access quickly (money, passport, mobile phone, anti mosquito gear etc.). You are wearing it on your body, so it adds some security as well.
  • Heat-It - our anti mosquito heater. Extremely small while doing amazing work. I have lost all my fear of being bitten by mosquitos. Just connect it to the phone, heat it up and mosquito itches are gone within seconds.
  • Sabinetek Smartmike+ and AudioWow - switch them on and you can record great audio quality with noise cancelling on your phone
  • Delux Seeker M618XSD - It's my first vertical mouse and I will never go back to a traditional mouse. After having pain in the shoulders for a long time, it turned out, it was my wrong ergonomics when working on the computer (and I am working 8-10 hours per day on the computer, so ergonomics do matter).

What We Missed And Take With Us Next Time

  • Extension for power adapter - sometimes we had a power outlet 3m away from us, but I just had 2m of cable with me.
  • Swimming glasses - I forgot them, but sometimes it's good to have them
  • Small set of tools (screwdriver etc.) - I needed to fix some things, but was unable to do so. I need a tiny tool consisting of a screwdriver with several attachments (Torx, Phillips screw etc.)

What We Can Leave At Home Or We Have To Replace Next Time

  • Mini keyboard - it's too clunky - I need to replace it with another, lightweight solution
  • Portable Apple computer keyboard - it's too heavy and I barely used it
  • Neck cushion - we chose ours made of foam. They are quite clunky, heavy and even uncomfortable, because in the neck part they are pretty big and putting pressure on your neck when you sit. Dana's version is a bit better, but we are looking for something more lightweight to inflate maybe.
  • Microphone Pop-Shield - great to have if you need it, but if you don't it takes too much space. We need to find another solution that's more compact
  • Zoom H2n Recording device - can be connected directly to the computer and used as a studio-quality microphone. Perfect for recording vocals on the go. But too clunky as well. Need to find something smaller with similar features.
  • Notebook tent - great to have, if you want to work in the sun on a table. At the same time it turned out to be always uncomfortable to work in a bright environment. Because in the tent it becomes hot then. And it takes up some space.
