The Piazza delle Erbe

Hey Steemians and Hiveians,

as I told you in my last post, one of the first things we did in Verona was to visit a city tour. Today my little post series about the citytour continues. The whole tour took about four to five hours, which may not sound like much, but with 30 degrees in the shade and the glowing midday heat it was enough ;) In the few hours we visit a lot of sights of Verona. Today I will tell you about one of them - the Torre dei Lamberti and the centre of the old town.

The Torre dei Lamberti is a tower in Verona and with 84 meters it is one of the highest buildings in the city.

The tower is located right in the centre of the old town, about half a kilometre north-northeast of the Arena di Verona in Piazza delle Erbe. The tower was built in 1172 and like many of the sights here, it is a Romanesque building.

What I can only recommend to everybody who has a more time: to climb up the tower once and enjoy a view over the whole city. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to do this due to the tight program of the city tour. But we would have done so if we have had more time in Verona.

Today the tower is a popular tourist attraction. A lift or 368 steps will take you to a viewing platform from where you can enjoy a wide view over Verona.

The octagonal Torre dei Lamberti is the last remaining tower of the historic town hall (Palazzo del Comune) dating back to the 12th century. The building is centrally located in Via della Costa, in the heart of the old town. Also the marble Roman arched bridge Ponte Pietra, which I will tell you about in one of my next posts, and the fortified bridge Ponte Scaligero, with the Castelvecchio of the della Scala family built in 1356, are not far away. I wrote about the Castelveccio in my last post, feel free to have a look at it ;)

The queue at the cash desk was very long and could be seen from a good distance - but that can be a good thing. The entrance to the tower costs eight euros and is thus relatively high. But I can highly recommend the Verona Card, if you stay a few days longer in Verona and visit several sightseeings there, with it you get discounts almost everywhere. The entrance fee for the attached art museum is included in the price. During the week the entrance is closed at 17.15, on weekends at 18.15. Don't make the mistake we did and miss climbing up there, I've heard it's very nice ;)

What I almost liked even better than the tower was the city centre itself, thus the plaza "Piazza delle Erbe". The square is surrounded by buildings and monuments, which do not always fit together well in their architecture - but that is what makes the square so special and shows the historical and epochal influences very well. There was also a rather big market on the plaza, where mainly souvenirs of the local people but also fruits and vegetables are sold. At the edge there are many small cafés and rsetaurants. The Piazza delle Erbe can also be called the living heart of Verona.

On the first picture on the right you can see the Tribuna, a small raised canopy from the 16th century, which gave the market guard a good view over the square. Those who were guilty of something were chained to the Tribuna and the people then mocked them. New laws and announcements were also read from the Tribuna.
