Visiting Arima Hot Spring with my friend
A friend of mine was visiting from England and we were thinking of something we could do only in Japan. Arima Onsen Hot Spring is a famous hot spring resort that can be reached from Osaka by train and is very popular among tourists. There are many hot spring towns in Japan, but Arima is famous for the quality and quantity of its hot spring water. Above all, it is a historical hot spring resort, having been discovered more than 1,000 years ago in Japan, and it is recorded in historical accounts that successive emperors and famous historical figures in Japan have healed themselves from travel fatigue in this hot spring.
友達がイギリスから遊びに来てて、何か日本でしかできないことを考えていました。大阪から行ける温泉としては、有馬温泉が有名で電車で行ける距離で観光客にも大人気の温泉街です。日本には沢山ある温泉街ですが、その中でも温泉の質と水量で有名です。そして、何よりも日本の中で１０００年以上前から発見されていた歴史的な温泉街で、日本の歴代の天皇や歴史的に有名な人たちもこの温泉で旅の疲れを癒したと歴史的な見聞録に記録されています。
Many small stores line the streets of Arima Onsen Town. They sold dumplings, hot spring rice crackers, and other delicious snacks that can only be found in the hot spring resort area. I tried the onsen dango. Onsen dumplings are dumplings with sweet red bean paste inside, steamed using hot spring steam. The dumplings smelled slightly of hot spring water, and the warm dumplings were really delicious in the cold temperatures!
有馬温泉街にはたくさん小さな店が道に並んでいます。その店で団子や温泉煎餅と言った温泉街でしか食べれない美味しいお菓子を売っていました。私は温泉団子を食べました。温泉団子は中は甘いあんこが入っていて、温泉の蒸気を使って蒸した団子です。団子はほんのりと温泉の匂いがして、温かい団子は寒い気温の中食べると本当に美味しかったです！
First, we headed to “Kogane no Yu (Golden Hot Spring)” the most famous hot spring in Arima Onsen. Kogano-no-yu is an outside hot spring in Arima Onsen, and is open to anyone who does not stay at a ryokan in the Arima Onsen spa resort area. There are three such out-spa baths in the hot spring resort area: Kogane-no-yu (Golden) ,Shiragin-no-yu (Silver), and Taiko-no-yu (Hot Springs for War Lord), and Kogane-no-yu is the most popular out-spa. As expected, it is very popular, and when we arrived, the waiting time was 30 minutes. I have been to Arima Onsen many times, but this was the first time I had to wait. I got the impression that the number of tourists from overseas seems to be increasing these days, and many different languages were being spoken. Arima Onsen seems to be becoming more and more internationalized and crowded.

先ずは有馬温泉の中で一番有名な、「黄金の湯」に向かいしました。この黄金の湯は有馬温泉の中で入れる外湯と言われる温泉で、有馬温泉街の中の旅館に泊まらなくてもだれでも温泉に入れるお風呂になります。温泉街の中にはそういった、「外湯」が３つあって、「黄金の湯」「白銀の湯」「太閤の湯」があります、そして、この「黄金の湯」が一番人気のある外湯になります。さすがに人気があって、着いた時には待ち時間が３０分でした。何度も有馬温泉に来たことがあるのですが、初めて待ち時間が発生していました。この頃は海外からの観光客も増えている様で、色々な言語が飛び交っている印象を受けました。有馬温泉の結構、国際化している様で賑わっていました。
There are many small alleys in the hot spring resort area, and this hot spring resort, located in a valley, has a very nice atmosphere. At the corner of each alley stands a Shinto shrine, dedicated to a local deity. There was an atmosphere that the god of hot springs was protecting the town, it is like Spirited Away from the Ghibli Studio. There was steam coming out of the Arima Onsen hot spring, and it smelled a little like sulfur, creating the atmosphere of a hot spring resort.
温泉街の中には小さな路地がたくさんあって、谷合にあるこの温泉街はとても情緒があります。小さな路地の角には神道の社がたっていて、地域の神をまつっています。温泉の神様が街を護っている雰囲気がありました。有馬温泉の源泉が出ている所では湯気が出ていて、少し硫黄の匂いもしてすごく温泉街の雰囲気が出ていました。
After “Golden Hot Spring,” I recommend “Silver Hot Spring” as a place to go. Although the water is a little hot, it was very good on a cold day as it warmed my body. My body warmed up from the bottom of my heart, and I could feel my body warming up even after getting out of the hot water. Walking through the hot spring resort area in winter with my body warmed up, I felt very emotional and a little hungry, so I started walking around looking for cafes and restaurants.
「黄金の湯」の後に行く場所としてお勧めが、「白銀の湯」です。少し熱めの湯ではあるのですが、寒い日には体がぽかぽかと温まりとても良かったです。体が心から温まり、お湯から上がった後でも体がポカポカしているのがわかりました。温まった体の中、冬の温泉街を歩くととても情緒があり少し小腹がすいたのでカフェやレストランを探して歩き始めました。
I found a very stylish cafe near where the source of the Arima Onsen hot spring is located. The cafe had a terrace and was open late at night, so I decided to go there. This place, with its beautifully illuminated spring water source, was memorable, and I recalled memories of visiting here with my father in the past. It had been many years since I had been here, but I was filled with nostalgia remembering those memories.
有馬温泉の源泉が出ている場所の近くにとてもお洒落なカフェがありました。テラスが付いたカフェで、夜遅くまで開いていたので行ってみることにしました。きれいにライトアップされた源泉が出ているこの場所は思い出深く、昔は父とここに訪れた思い出を思い出しました。もう、何年も前に来たのですが、その思い出を思い出し懐かしさでいっぱいになりました。
Afterwards, I took a short walk around the hot spring resort area. Some stores were open until late at night, and I had a very Japanese experience strolling through the hot spring resort area while eating snacks. The onsen culture in a town that has flourished around onsen (hot springs) is very Japanese, and I was very happy to see that this kind of culture has been accepted by non-Japanese as well. It is true that the atmosphere of the quiet streets of the past is disappearing, but I hope that this onsen culture, which is developing and being accepted by visitors from abroad, will spread more widely around the world.
その後は少し温泉街を散歩しました。夜遅くまで開いているショップもあって、スナックを食べながら温泉街を散歩しているととっても日本っぽい思い出が出来ました。温泉街という、温泉を中心に栄えた町にある温泉文化はとても日本的で、この様な文化が日本人以外の人にも受け入れられていることにとても嬉しくなりました。確かに昔の様な静かな街並みという雰囲気はなくなりつつありますが、海外からのお客さんに受け入れられながら発展しているこの温泉文化がもっと世界中に拡がればいいなと感じました。
