I really enjoyed the three hour drive north west through the South Bernett region of Southern Queensland. We had not been this way for a while, it was probably a couple of years ago when we first got our first parkrun in this area. This trip was to collect another one and visit some new places. As we crossed this river I was surprised to see it was the Brisbane river I had no idea it weaves its way this far out.
This area is pretty much farming land with a few coal mines along the way. The coal mines are all being phased out but a lot of the locals are worried they will lose many good jobs.
Kingaroy is famous for a couple of things. It was the home of a long serving Queensland Premier that was able to govern with the help of a gerrymander back in 1970s and 80s. They were interesting times and there was still a lot of debate when I first move to Brisbane back in 87. Sir Joh Bjelke-Peterson got a lot done in his time as the country party leader, like getting World Expo 88 in Brisbane but it all end in courts and is now know as "Bjelkemander"
The other thing Kingaroy is famous for is Peanuts. There is a lot of information about them at the Kingaroy Heritage museum which is located across the road from the Heritage listed peanut silos.
There was a lot of colorful roses out the back of the museum.
Some of the old peanut machinery.
The old train station.
The big Peanut.
There a pretty good farmers market there too.
We headed up to Mount Wooroolin Lookout, five hundred odd meters above see level to checkout the view over town. You can just see the Peanut Silos to the left.
and we were promptly joined by a friendly brush turkey.
I could just make out one of the coal fired power stations on the horizon.
We stayed over night at the Y motel so we could get to a parkrun the next day further afield.
