We like Coona as the locals call it, we have stayed here a couple of times now and recon it is pretty under rated. It gives us all the good facilities of a decent sized town but is still close enough to get up into the Warrumbungle National park.
It is also the Astronomy Capital of Australia, We do not do a lot of star watching but maybe next time we can organise a tour of the Siding Spring Observatory. You can just make out the white dome on the photo below.
They have the world largest virtual solar system set up on all the main roads leading to and from Sliding Spring mountain. It is cool spotting the planets on the side of the road when approaching and leaving town.
38 million times smaller than the real thing but it differently puts it into perspective.
Town is full of all these astrological things I should learn more about it all, maybe one day.
I like all the old country town post offices, they are all unique and well looked after.
Christmas in a small Country towns seems a bit weird, I more relate to a Australian Christmas at the beach.
Crystal Kingdom is a pretty good shop and museum which shows off a lot of crystals that were found in in area and how they were formed in the age of Dinosaurs and volcanoes in Australia.
A painting in the museum from grand high tops and a photo I took from the same spot the artists must painted it from below.
The bread knife is sort of the last bit of the volcano rim still standing.
The tourist Information centre in Coonabrabran is pretty cool too. They have the Tambar Springs Diprotodon which was found not far from here. It was the largest Marsupial that roamed Australia about 20,000 years ago. It was about the size of a rhino
We have stayed at the Acacia Motor lodge twice now. I find these double brick places at lot quieter and cooler but only a little more expensive.

Coonabarabran sounds like an incredible place that combines science, history, and nature. I love the idea of the solar system along the road—it must be amazing to spot the planets while driving! And the Diprotodon—imagine running into a rhino-sized creature roaming around 20,000 years ago! Definitely a destination worth exploring. Thanks for the recommendation! 🚀✨
