I remember this hill very fondly. It was because I was trying to complete my first Ironman triathlon event, I had just cycled the best part of 180km. It was a long easy down hill coast and I could see the city of Port Macquarie which was the transition area and I could finally get off the bike which I had been cycling for the past 7 hours. I laugh now as it would not be long into the run leg and I would be wishing I was back on the bike! Lol.
It is funny to think how I was so focused on the endurance event that I did not see much around me let alone learn any of the history of the area. There was no Iron man event for me on this trip so it was a much better chance to have a better look around. We were driving paste this hill when @consciouscat hear some bird calls she remembered so well from when she was a child and wanted to stop. It looked like a great spot for a short walk and we had some spare time before heading to our accommodation.
From a distance I thought there was some of the old windmill left but it was just a sculpture from 2004 named Folly as the hill was known as Gillman’s Folly after Captain Henry Gillman, an early commandant.
The beach was great and well as a few of the historical information boards.
Port Macquarie Historical Society photos below.
The wind mill was build by the early settlers to grind maize and wheat grown on the near by farms.
The birds we originally stopped for.
Seems the Black Cockatoos like Old wind mill hill too, Luckily they have let a few trees grow back,
