In order for our stay in Greece not to be too lazy and not based solely on driving from one beach to another, we decided to leave the coast for at least once and head inland to see up close what the mountains in Greece look like. If the idea of going to the mountains came up, there could only be one goal, namely Mount Olympus. Olympus is a vast mountain range consisting of several smaller peaks, of which Mitikas, 2917 meters above sea level, is the highest peak in all of Greece. The mountain literally grows out of the sea, so the view from the top and the view from the foot of the mountain range are spectacular. Its monumentality made it the seat of the Greek gods in ancient Greek mythology, including the most important of them, Zeus. There was a bad aura over the mountain, because it was said that whenever a person tried to climb there, they fell from the top and died a tragic death. From the Myth of Prometheus we know that only he managed to climb to the top of Olympus, but the whole story ended tragically for him too. The first documented ascent near the peak can boast the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire Mehmed IV. He did it in 1669 and although he did not climb to the very top, he was close enough to state with 100% certainty that there are no gods on Olympus.

Aby nasz pobyt w Grecji nie był zbyt leniwy i nie opierał się wyłącznie na jeżdżeniu od jednej do drugiej plaży postanowiliśmy na chociaż jeden raz opuścić wybrzeże i udać się wgłęb kraju po to aby zobaczyć z bliska jak wyglądają góry w Grecji. Jeśli pojawił się pomysł wyjścia w góry, to cel mógł być tylko jeden, a mianowicie Góra Olimp. Olimp jest to rozległy masyw górski w skład którego wchodzi kilka mniejszych szczytów z których Mitikas liczący 2917 metrów nad poziomem morza jest najwyższym szczytem w całej Grecji. Góra wyrasta wręcz z morza, a więc widok ze szczytu, oraz widok z podnóża masywu jest spektakularny. Jego monumentalizm uczynił go w starożytności w mitologii greckiej siedzibą greckich bogów w tym najważniejszego z nich czyli Zeusa. Nad górą panowała zła aura, bo mówiło się, że ilekroć jakiś człowiek próbował tam wejść, to spadał ze szczytu i giną śmiercią tragiczną. Z Mitu o Prometeuszu wiemy, że tylko jemu udało się wspiąć na szczyt Olimpu, ale cała historia i dla niego też zakończyła się tragicznie. Pierwszym udokumentowanym wejściem w pobliże wierzchołka może pochwalić się sułtan Imperium Osmańskiego Mehmed IV. Dokonał on tego w roku 1669 i co prawda na sam szczyt nie wszedł, ale był na tyle blisko, że mógł ze stuprocentową pewnością stwierdzić, że żadnych bogów na Olimpie nie ma.

We started our expedition from the parking lot at the Prionia sanctuary. From there, we began a laborious trek ending in the Spilios Agapitos shelter, located at an altitude of 2,060 meters above sea level. There, we had the opportunity to pitch a tent and eat tzatziki purchased at the shelter. Despite the considerable altitude, the overnight stay was quite pleasant, because I expected it to be much colder, but we managed to sleep quite well. Right after sunrise, we left our luggage in the tent and set off upwards lightly without unnecessary ballast. After about 3 hours of climbing, we were almost at our destination, but like Sultan Mehmed IV, we did not climb to the very top, because the ascent to Mitikas did not look too inviting. A large pile of loose rocks, climbed by many tourists, most of whom looked quite careless, which gave me the impression that each of them could accidentally move a rock on the approach, which could turn into a deadly falling rock, is a common occurrence on the approach to Mitikas. We did not have helmets on this trip, so our Olympus peak was the peak of Skala, 2866 meters above sea level. The decision to return earlier turned out to be the right one, because as soon as we returned to the Spilios Agapitos shelter, a real storm broke out! As is the case with summer storms, it was very violent, but it passed as quickly as it came. The worst thing was that during the storm, there were probably a hundred more people trying to hide in the shelter than the shelter could accommodate. The crowds and humidity inside were unbearable. The further descent to the parking lot took us much longer than planned, because our legs were definitely failing us, but we consoled ourselves with the fact that we would soon be back to the warm sea.

My naszą ekspedycję zaczęliśmy od parkingu przy uroczysku Prionia. Z tego miejsca rozpoczął się mozolny trekking zakończony w schronisku Spilios Agapitos położony na wysokości 2060 metrów nad poziomem morza. Tam mieliśmy możliwość rozbicia namiotu i posilenia się zakupionymi w schronisku tzatzikami. Nocleg mimo znacznej wysokości był dość przyjazny, bo spodziewałem się, że będzie zdecydowanie zimniej, ale jednak udało się całkiem dobrze wyspać. Tuż po wschodzie słońca zostawiliśmy nasze bagaże w namiocie i na lekko bez zbędnego balastu ruszyliśmy w górę. Po około 3 godzinach wspinaczki byliśmy już niemal u celu, ale podobnie jak sułtan Mehmed IV na sam szczyt nie weszliśmy, bo wejście na Mitikas nie wyglądało zbyt zachęcająco. Duża kupa sypkich kamieni, na którą wspina się bardzo wielu turystów, z których większość wyglądała dość niefrasobliwie, przez co miałem wrażenie, że każdy z nich może przez jakieś nieopatrzne ruszenie kamienia na podejściu, który mógłby zamienić się w śmiertelnie niebezpieczny spadający kamień to zwykła codzienność na podejściu pod Mitikas. My nie mieliśmy na tym wyjeździe kasków, dlatego naszym szczytem Olimpu pozostał szczyt Skala o wysokości 2866 metrów nad poziomem morza. Decyzja o wcześniejszym powrocie okazała się o tyle słuszna, że gdy tylko wróciliśmy do schroniska Spilios Agapitos rozpętała się prawdziwa burza! Jak to letnia burza była ona bardzo gwałtowna, ale równie szybko co przyszła, to i przeszła. Najgorsze co było, to fakt, że w schronisku w trakcie burzy próbowało schować się chyba ze sto osób więcej niż owe schronisko jest w stanie pomieścić. Tłok i wilgotność panująca wewnątrz były nie do zniesienia. Dalsze schodzenie do parkingu trwało nam dużo dłużej niż planowaliśmy, bo nogi już zdecydowanie odmawiały nam posłuszeństwa, ale pocieszaliśmy się tym, że już niebawem znów wrócić mieliśmy nad ciepłe morze.
