Lagos State is one of 36 States in Nigeria. It is the biggest and the most populated city. It was actually the former Capital Territory of Nigeria. Lagos State is a highly recommended place for tourism (Just so you know). This was my first time in this big city and this is the story of how my 10 hours journey went.
As a medical student in school, I belong to an association named “FECAMDS” meaning Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students.
It is a body containing catholic medical students all over Nigeria. It is our custom to have a one-time convention every year. The convention is hosted in different schools depending on the previous host school. For the past 3 years, we have moved from Ebonyi State University to the University of Ilorin at Kwara State to Ahmadu Bello University at Zaria State.
So this year, Lagos State University was the host chapter and we had to travel to Lagos. At first, it was difficult to convince my mom to allow me to travel (ever since I lost my dad, things like this must be communicated to my mom). After I tried talking and it wasn't working, I decided to pray, and my major prayer point was for a “go ahead” because this was my first convention since my 4 years in the university. Even though I was willing to drop the idea if it wasn't God's will so I did a one-week prayer streak and on one of the days (can't remember the exact day). I had a dream that I was the coordinator during one of the programs at the convention. I woke up happy and took that as a “go ahead”!. I got a new shoe!
I started making plans for the convention, and I did a lot of shopping, packing, washing, and spending (bills almost choked me). It was a 4 days convention and our trip was slated for Wednesday. This is a pictorial story of how my trip to Lagos went.
We left our meeting point at exactly 7 am. To be very honest, I was really scared deep down considering the level of insecurity in the country. I just prayed and hoped for the best.
We stopped at Delta State (just after Bayelsa State) where we got some snack, used the restroom and stretched our legs. Their foods were so expensive (I think it’s because that’s the resting point for a lot of persons). I got just burger and coke and we continued our journey.
Immediately we got inside the car, I ate my snack and slept off. I couldn’t sleep peacefully because I needed to be awake to shout “driver please slow down”. I had series of short naps and before I knew it, we were at Edo State.
Our driver was piloting at a speed of 140 degrees, I’m sure you can now understand why I couldn’t sleep. Edo State didn’t really have good roads so we slowed down for awhile and this was around 12 pm. At around 2pm, we entered Ogun State where we stopped for the second time to eat. This time I saw foods I haven’t heard of before like roasted plantain and groundnut. Anyway, the whole environment wasn’t clean enough so I couldn’t get food .
This was our last stopping point before we got to our destination. After Ogun State, we entered Osun State where we started seeing good roads again. I couldn’t bring out my phone to take pictures as that was too risky with the speed we were driving at. At exactly 3 pm, we got to Lagos State.
Lagos State welcomed us with 2 hours of traffic on the first mainland bridge after which we managed to find our way. We passed the longest bridge I have ever seen, the third mainland bridge which led us to the island. I couldn't bear missing the sight of this I had to bring out my phone to get a picture. It was already past 5 pm and we were still trying to find our way to the school where we were supposed to camp.
We finally got to our destination at 7 pm and about 15 schools had already arrived including Abia State University, Imo State University, University of Abuja, Benue State University, Enugu State University, and some others. These are pictures of the school “Holy Child College, Obalende” were we lodged.
This was the second day of the convention and each school had to appear in their unique attire for Thanksgiving. I and some others represented the University of Port Harcourt.
A picture of I and my chapter President.
We also had our games, though I didn't participate in them. I'm not a fan of games.
This was the third day of the convention where we had to go on sightseeing, we had our dinner too. We went to shoprite in Lagos state.
These are photos from our dinner night.
My 12 hours journey to Lagos State was filled with fun. I was so happy I took the risk of attending the convention. It was a big step and I don't regret it. And about my dream, I was elected as a National Executive Member (dreams come true you know).
This is a picture of my inauguration as the National Financial Secretary of Fecamds Nigeria.
I hope you enjoyed my story.
PS: All pictures in this article is from my photo gallery (containing photos shared during the convention) on my phone, iPhone 6s. .
Congratulation, that is a big step!
You indeed had fun during this travel, and although you say you are not a big fan of games, well you must admit, it is fun! :)
Oh yes I did. I really had fun. Thank you so much @mipiano i will try to see to it. Other than racing, I don't fancy any other. Though I'll try to add indoor games too
You like racing? hehehe, that's cool too 😀
