Philippines is filled with thousands of islands and is home to some of the world’s most beautiful places with stunning beaches, amazing landscapes, and various wildlife. One paradise is the Island Garden City of Samal also known by its acronym, IGaCos. The hometown of my beloved grandparents. For me, Samal is one of the best tourist-spot in Mindanao. Their beaches are clear and blue even the mountains are green and fresh, as well as their waterfalls that are so refreshing, and their breathtaking landscapes that will definitely leave you in awe. And one of their hidden treasure is the Puting Bato
Puting Bato, which translates to “white rock”, is the highest peak on Samal Island, standing at an impressive 1,755 feet above sea level. This mountain offers a unique adventure for those who wish to explore beyond the island’s beaches and delve into its highlands. The journey to Putting Bato begins at the Samal ferry terminal in Sasa, where a short ferry ride transports you to the island. Upon arrival, local motorcycles, known as habal-habal, are available to take you to the jump-off site. Two trails lead to the peak Guilon trail, a 2-hour trek, and the Taya Pok trail, a shorter but steeper path. These trails, through challenging, offer a rewarding experience for both novice and experienced climbers alike. As you ascend, the trail unfolds a captivating natural beauty. You’ll pass through rock crevices, stumble upon a treehouse nestled in the heart of the trail, and walk through gardens filled with wildflowers where butterflies dance in the air. The climb is a sensory experience, with the fresh mountain air filling your lungs and the sound of rustling leaves and chirping birds providing a soothing soundtrack.
Reaching the first campsite marks a significant milestone in our climb. There are friendly caretakers who sell fresh buko (coconut) to quench your thirst and provide a refreshing break. As we rested, I went to look out for birds that flying in groups in the sky, adding more peace to the view. Reconnecting with my family after a long separation of almost three years, both after the pandemic, was an experience of pure joy. This reunion was a much-needed break from the harsh realities of life. It gave us the chance to unwind, to breathe, and to revel in the warmth of familial bonds that had been stretched thin by time and distance.
Life, as I’ve come to understand it, is a continuous cycle of trials and tribulations, interspersed with moments of happiness and contentment. It’s a journey filled with lessons-hard ones, joyous ones, and even the ones that leave us perplexed. Often, we find ourselves grappling with these lessons, trying to comprehend their true meaning in the limited time we have. Life, in its complexity, tends to pose more questions than it provides answers. It can be exhausting, especially when you’re constantly scrutinizing it. However, this exhaustion should not be mistaken for doubt or uncertainty. On the contrary, it is a sign of certainty, a confirmation that we are indeed living, experiencing, and learning. It’s a testament to the fact that we are engaged in the relentless pursuit of understanding life and its intricacies.
In my journey, I’ve realized that healing often starts from within. It’s a process that requires a strong desire to heal, a willingness to put in the necessary work, and a commitment to self-care. In times of hardship, we need to be kinder to ourselves, embrace our flaws and shortcomings, and give ourselves the love and care that we often extend to others. The world around us is constantly evolving, and not always for the better. It’s a harsh reality that we need to accept. We can’t prevent the bad thing from happening, but that doesn’t mean we should stop trying to make a positive impact. Sometimes, it requires us to take risks, to put everything on the line in the hope of creating a change. And who knows? If we’re willing to take the leap of faith, we might just get lucky. We might be able to leave this world a little better than we found it. We might be able to instill hope in the hearts of those who have lost it, to inspire change in those who are capable of it, and to spread love in a world that desperately needs it.
Stepping foot on Putting Bato was a transformative experience for me, allowing me to release all the pent-up negativity that had been weighing me down. It served as a cathartic escape, a moment of solace amidst the chaos of life. This journey not only provided me with personal healing but also created lasting and beautiful memories with my family. Putting Bato is much more than just a geographical landmark. It stands as a symbol of the island’s rich and diverse natural beauty, showcasing a harmonious blend of majestic mountains and serene seas. The trek of Putting Bato is an adventure in itself, challenging your physical endurance, rewarding your efforts with stunning vistas, and imprinting in your mind an unforgettable experience.
