Worldmappin and TravelFeed: Options for Mapping Your Travel Posts

in TravelFeed6 months ago

Dear TravelFeed community,

We're thrilled to share some exciting news about the future of travel mapping on the Hive blockchain!

As many of you know, Pinmapple announced its closure some weeks ago.

We stepped up to preserve the pins for the TravelFeed community and to ensure that the valuable service provided would continue with our TravelFeed Map.

@detlev and @lizanomadsoul shared our vision of preserving this crucial feature for the community from the very first moment on. They assembled a team to continue Pinmapple as @worldmappin and two weeks later, Pinmapple handed over the service, pins and community to them.

Two Platforms, One Goal

While we considered joining forces to run a single map, we realized that our projects have distinct focuses that deserve individual attention:

  1. Worldmappin: Worldmappin in the long run aims to develop into a versatile mapping application that caters to various topics and communities, extending beyond travel.
  2. TravelFeed: We will continue to focus exclusively on travel content, with our integrated map feature designed specifically for this purpose.

While we both want to continue Pinmapple’s functionality for the Hive community, these different approaches mean that not all pins on Worldmappin are also relevant for the TravelFeed Map.

Changes to Pinning Your Travel Posts

After thoughtful discussions, we've come to an agreement that we believe will best serve all users:

  • TravelFeed will still use the Pinmapple code snippet.
  • Posts published through TravelFeed or using the Pinmapple code snippet generated on the TravelFeed Map will be pinned to both TravelFeed and Worldmappin maps. Those posts will have two comments, as they will be available on both maps.
  • These posts will also be curated by both TravelFeed and Worldmappin curation teams.
  • Posts using the Worldmappin code snippet generated on the Worldmappin website will be pinned only on Worldmappin and not on the TravelFeed Map. In that case you will only find a comment from Worldmappin. These posts will be curated only by Worldmappin.

This arrangement ensures that travel-related content receives maximum exposure while allowing Worldmappin to cater to a broader range of topics.

What This Means for You

As a TravelFeed user, nothing changes - your posts will continue to be pinned to and curated by both maps. There is no need to add two code snippets.

If you are using Worldmappin to pin your travel posts to the TravelFeed Map, this will no longer work. Your posts will be pinned only to Worldmappin and you will only get the Worldmappin comment.

Looking Ahead

TravelFeed and Worldmappin are both committed to providing the best possible experience for the Hive community.

We want to express our gratitude to the Worldmappin team for the shared vision. Together, we're ensuring that the spirit of travel lives on while expanding the possibilities for mapping on Hive.

So, it's the old/classic format for TravelFeed, and both formats for WorldMapPin. And, WorldMapPin will support both formats indefinitely?

That's a good compromise. Because, the new format will eventually become overloaded with additional information.

Good luck with your service.
