Hi Everyone,
Most days while in Japan, we try to go out for dinner to try different types of yummy Japanese food. Right in the middle of the city at Umeda, we came across Ohatsu Tenjin Shrine. Most shrines would have closed after dinner, but this one was still lit up bright at the end of a shopping strip. Ohatsu Tenjin Shrine is not a famous location like the big sites, but it was a nice stop after dinner.
The shrine was built to remember a tale of Ohatsu and Tokubei. It is a classic story that is local, and Ohatsu and Tokubei cannot be together due to various circumstances, so they choose to end their lives at the very place where the shrine is located. This story has been made into short plays and stories. Lovers would come to this shrine to hope their relationship will last forever.
As we can see around the shrine, there is a sense of romance everywhere. From the lights, and lanterns to the wooden boards where people would write their wishes. There would be festivals in July and in the New Year where people would dress up praying for good luck in their relationships.
You may feel awkward finding a shrine wedged in between high-rise buildings and busy surroundings but do make a quick stop to see how quiet this place can be right in the middle of the city. It was still open at 9 pm after our dinner so I believe it won’t close too early as the area is pretty busy. Such a small little gem right in the middle of Umeda.
