Kuta Beach Bali, viral on social media?
I share this post with all of you because just a few days ago, Kuta Beach became a scene because there was a post by a foreign tourist from Australia who was disturbed and promised not to return to Bali because of the unpleasant treatment of some local hawkers.

We experienced the same thing while there. But we really understand that, apart from being fellow Indonesians as well as Balinese people who are completely dependent on the tourism sector, during the 2 years of the Covid-19 pandemic, they couldn't do anything and had almost no income. Domestic flights were restricted, international flights were completely closed, all economic sectors based on tourism services were paralyzed because not a single foreign tourist could visit Bali and again, it lasted more than 2 years.

Currently, Bali tourist destinations are re-opening and foreign tourists are coming back. Balinese people and tourism players are excited again. Including the hawkers on Kuta Beach are also very excited.
They again sell beach clothes or pants, Balinese fabrics, knick-knacks and Balinese accessories or sell massage services on the beach and other services.

During the closure of Bali tourism, they had no income at all, so when Bali reopened, their enthusiasm for trading returned, becoming excessive euphoria.

For example, they unknowingly scramble and crowd around tourists when offering their wares, or take too long to offer something even though the tourist has refused or stay there while waiting for the tourist to change his mind.

From the perspective of tourists who want to rest and enjoy the atmosphere of Kuta Beach, they are very disturbed, they just want to relax and don't want to buy anything. They wanted the hawkers to get away from their side as soon as possible.

I could feel the uncomfortable atmosphere the foreign tourist was in and had great empathy for him. Besides that, I also fully understand the actions of these hawkers because of the lack of tourists during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The good news

I received news directly from my friend Made, a Balinese who lives around Kuta Beach, that the local authorities had taken action against the perpetrators and had brought order to all the hawkers there. They can still sell, but must prioritize comfort and respect the privacy of tourists at tourist objects.
If anyone violates it and local authorities receive reports from tourists, the hawkers will be fined and will not get permission to sell again at any time on Kuta Beach.

About what happened to my friend.

The day we arrived at Kuta Beach, we really wanted to set foot on the beach, but when we were there, a number of women hawkers immediately approached and surrounded us. My friends and I immediately walked away because we didn't want to buy anything.

But one of my friends immediately took over the situation. He swiftly approached the hawkers. He conveyed in polite language that we were very uncomfortable with this situation. We are very grateful, he has represented us to convey that.

At that time, he also succeeded in teaching the street vendors some important points on how to trade properly to visitors, including:

  • Don't fight each other
  • Don't crowd and surround
  • Do not force
  • Don't linger
  • Immediately leave if tourists are not interested

He had managed to overcome a small problem at that time and when I heard the news about this beautiful beach going viral on social media, I can only smile...

Salam Hormat
