I came across these paintings when I got of the metro at a place called St. Louis. It's located south of the capital Port Louis. The metro in Mauritius runs from the capital to Curepipe in the center of the island. Its fast and cheap. Also, its rather new. I think the trains started to run during the covid-19 pandemic.
It was not so easy to get to get good photos because there isn't much space between the wall and the fence towards the track. The wall presents paintings of children and also images well-known to Mauritius. The first two are lovely. Local children playing. The nexts shows images you right a way will recognize as places and plants known on the island.
This painting shows the pond with the Giant Water Lillies / the Victoria Amazonica, that are found in Pamplemousses Botanic Garden. The garden is famous for this pond with the water lillies and the White Lotus pond. Besides these ponds you will find more than 80 different species of palmtrees. It was a Frenchman who took the initiative to create the garden in 1767.
The coconut palm trees are found everywhere on the island.
Fishing boats at the northen tip of the island. Even though the island has beaches almost all the way around the island, and you will see lots of fishingboat all around. But this place is Cap Malhereux. In the background you see two islands. Cap Malhereux has historical significanse, as it was here the British made a surprise attack againts the French and became the new colonial masters. You can see two islands in the background. The one to the left is Coin de Mire and the other is Ile Ronde.
If you come to Mauritius during summer you will see lots of these flamboyant trees in full bloom.
I don't know who the artist is or when the wall was painted. I did take the metro for the first time in 2022, but didn't see the painted wall.Thats why are think it has been done in resent years. A pleasant surprise to see street art outside the capital.
