This new mural in my town shows a portrait of Chief Blackhawk, who led his people along the Rock River while the US army was in pursuit.
And also Miracle, am extremely rare non-albino white Buffalo, that was born here and fulfilled historic prophesies by several tribes. It was believed that White Buffalo Calf Woman's return would restore harmony and spirituality to a troubled world. Miracle was born here in 1994 and a pilgrimage began by many tribes to visit her and hold ceremonies.
The history of Blackhawk happened along the banks of the river that flows behind my house and at many sites that are familiar to me.
In 1804 the US goverment negotiated a treaty with two representatives of the Sauk nation. The government believed they had bought Sauk lands east of the Mississippi for only $2,500. Sauk chiefs believed the two tribesman never possessed the authority to speak for the nation and that the treaty was invalid. The Indians continued to inhabit their village of Saukenuk near the mouth of the Rock River,
The Sauk began getting crowded out by the increasing number of settlers and lead miners. The government ordered the Sauk to move across the Mississippi in return for enough corn to survive the winter.
But in 1832, when the government failed to honor its promise of corn and people were hungry, Sauk chief Black Hawk led 1,200 Sauk back to the Illinois side of the river to re-occupy their homeland and harvest the corn fields and gardens they had left behind
They found the corn fields of their village trampled by cattle and fenced by settlers. The American forces tried to capture the Sauk, and that started the brief but bloody Black Hawk War.
450–600 Indians and 70 soldiers and settlers were killed during the war.
The history is taken from various books that I have read and lectures I have attended about local history.
Many area businesses bear the name Blackhawk.
