Out in the surf I meet a lot of women now - sometimes they put number the blokes, which definitely changes the vibe of the lineup. I grew up being one of the only girls surfing so it's taken a while to get used to it. I love it now though - I've met some really nice people waiting for waves or checking the surf.
One is the amazing artist Minerva. She's a vivacious, passionate Italian who lives on the coast with her young daughter. Check out some of her work on her website - from drawings to sculptures to wall art and even trapeze swing work, she does beautiful whimsical pieces.
This mural graces the wall of the Angelsea Opportunity Shop - you might know these kind of shops as charity or thrift stores. It's run by Baptists, hence the cross floating in the clouds. The scene is of a break I surf often, Point Roadnight - kangaroos stand as if they are contemplating a paddle out.
Three yellow tailed black cockatoos fly over the scene. They are a familiar sight around the area. We get them at our place too - their cry is melancholy and their flight majestic. Everybody loves them.
Hear their call in the video below:
Next is the eastern rosellas. They also grace our property, shy things that flash colour.
In some places the parrots are less shy and have learnt to eat from your hand. These ones are larger and a real delight. I love the bird life near us.
Next are the beautiful echnida. They are Australias version of a hedgehog I suppose. They are quite shy but can often be spotted crossing trails or roads.
Then of course there is the laughing kookaburra. We have a family of them who cackle in the treeline at our place. Ours are shy, but in some places in Australia they've learnt to come down and steal food with the best of them. Their sound is certainly iconic.
Here's one perched in my garden.
Last but not least is the brushtail possum. I don't have any photos of them as they are nocturnal and are known for running across tin roofs at night like baby elephants, stealing fruit and eating vegetable gardens. They can be such pains but we still kinda love them. Thank goodness we only have a really old dude in our garden we only hear shuffling in the leaves at night. In the fifteen years of being on this property we have only seen him once!
Ah! On second look, I realize this is instead a sugar glider! You can see his 'wings' - he can sail from tree to tree!
I hope you loved this unusual tour of the animals in Angelsea and our place in southern Australia via this lovely mural.
With Love,
