During my walk in Gatchina I came across two wonderful graffiti, and both graffiti were located near railway stations. I told about this walk some time ago and mentioned that my walk started at one railway station and ended at another, but I didn't focus on this fact. Now, however, I want to dwell on the subject a little further.
For historical reasons, two railway lines meet in the small town of Gatchina. One of the railway branches was laid by a state-owned company, and the other was a private commercial enterprise. Now there is no difference between the two - but we have two different routes between St Petersburg and Gatchina, they pass through different intermediate stations.
Both railway lines start in St Petersburg, but the trains go in different directions and the distance between the railway lines is quite considerable until they approach Gatchina from different directions. In Gatchina the two roads converge again and it is not too difficult to walk from one railway line to the other. I like the fact that it is possible to plan the route of the walk in such a way that it is not necessary to return to the starting point at the end.
This time I started my walk at Gatchina Baltiyskaya station, and the first landmark I encountered was the beautiful graffiti on the walls of the transformer box. I was fascinated by this work. I immediately remembered a children's counting saying:
One-two-three-four -
Let's count the holes in the cheese.
If there are many holes in the cheese,
Then the cheese will be delicious.
The second graffiti I met at the very end of the walk, near Tatyanino station. This station was named in honour of Grand Duchess Tatiana, daughter of Emperor Nicholas II.
During the First World War, Grand Duchess Tatiana became a sister of mercy. Not far from this station there was a hospital where trains with the wounded arrived. Apparently, we see the portrait of Grand Duchess Tatiana at the entrance to the underground passage leading to the suburban trains towards St. Petersburg.
Inside the underground passage we can see a series of railway-themed images. The railway trains depicted in these graffiti clearly belong to different periods of the railway's existence.
