Then: a blur on her right—a rock came lobbing toward them. Even without her Artwork, June could tell it would land short and to the left, but that didn't stop her leftmost bodyguard from lunging out to swat the projectile down. There was a whup-whup-whup noise from her right as her other guard threw some kind of weighted-rope contraption.

Frix made to call out, but found his throat dry. Not dry: scratching. A sudden terror gripped him as he recognized the feeling. It was like on the bridge, but less intense. He realized his legs were also slushy, tired, and tingly. The urge to sit down was overwhelming, but he kept his feet, swaying. They had all been quite insane to venture this close to a witch town. How could they be so stupid? So naive?

He had to think quick. By now Mossa and the brothers could well be out of range of his hornrat call, loud as it was. He could stab this witch, and go on, but if she was telling the truth they’d be done for. He could stab her and call the mission off, but then they’d never really know and he would never live it down. Forget the bole-marshal dressing him down—the triadic Heads themselves would demand he explain how a junior Seedwind figured it was his decision to abort a raid. Especially a raid like this one.
Bad choices, all around. Unless…

I really loved the tension in this excerpt. I could feel how stuck Frix was, realizing he was caught in a no-win situation. Excellently crafted and a pleasure to read!
