Gaming Photography Weekly Contest: Sunrise and Sunset. My entry

No matter what game I'm playing, if it shows me a gorgeous sunset or sunrise, I'll drop whatever I'm doing and gaze at it in wonder — even if my player character is being chased by a horde of deadly monsters or trying to beat a tightly timed quest. Thanks to the courtesy of the wonderful Gaming Photography community, now I have a chance to present a collection of my finest screenshots showing the Sun going down behind the horizon, or greeting a new morning. So, fellow gamers, join me and let's watch the burning sky together!

All screenshots are mine. I can prove it.

"The sun is setting and the day is late. As we walk over this wasteland of hate." Sunsets in the Stalker trilogy have always reminded me of this line in a song by the British band Blitz. I took this photo while playing the final mission in Clear Sky, the second game in the series. My anti-hero Scar is taking a short rest in the middle of the lost town Limansk, looking at the evening blaze before making the final push into the heart of Chornobyl.

Its light struggling to punch through the thick air, the Sun is barely visible above the horizon. The mood this view gives the player is appropriate because, at this moment of playing Fallout New Vegas, we're at the aptly named Camp Forlorn Hope. This is the first line defence of the scarred New California Republic and things could hardly be any worse. Soon, the life-giving star will disappear and bloodthirsty warriors of the Caesar's Legion will crawl out of the night and, yet again, try to butcher the defenders.

Nine years have passed since the release of Witcher 3 but the visuals in this game have aged like fine Toussaint wine. I especially love watching sunsets while exploring cities like Novigrad, maybe because I live in a large medieval city myself. There is something captivating in the contrast between the fiery sky and the dull grey of the city. When looking at this picture, one can feel the air and the stone the buildings are made of getting cooler with every passing minute.

The visual style of the survival simulator The Long Dark is hardly photorealistic but its sunsets can be breathtaking. Still, there isn't too much time to admire the sight because, unlike most other games, the setting sun means incoming danger. The temperature will drop soon and the predators will become much more dangerous in darkness. In a way, sunsets are one of the game mechanics, reminding the player that it's time to finish the mostly peaceful exploration and look for a shelter. Even that crashed helicopter is better than spending the night in the open.

On the other hand, sunny mornings give the player a reason to sigh in relief. After all, you survived a deadly cold night and the sight of the rising sun means that the weather will be good enough, without deadly blizzards or mist. It's time to hunt and forage, preparing for the oncoming darkness.

Franklin Clinton, one of the main protagonists of GTA V, spends most of his on-screen time frowning and being quietly angry. It would be unfair to blame him for that attitude because he was born and raised in one of the violent Los Santos ghettos. To make things even more miserable for him, he became involved in serious criminal activity together with two absolute lunatics. Things do get better at the end of the game, though. After so many bloody shootouts, heists and car chases, Franklin can finally find some peace and quiet, watching a wonderful Pacific sunset.

Moscow in Metro 2033 isn't a nice place, especially on the surface. Nuclear weapons, and worse, have taken the toll, but the almighty Sun isn't bothered by that, still rising and setting as ever. It's a shame, though, that to get the best view you need to climb a tower infested with nasty mutants.

FAR CRY 6 (36).jpg

The revolutionaries are finishing the preparations for the final assault against the mad dictator Antón Castillo, the central antagonist of Far Cry 6. Now, they're enjoying a moment of relief before going to sleep. The attack will commence at dawn and, this isn't a big spoiler, some of them won't survive the next day. At least they have a chance to admire the last sunset in their lives.

Every game mentioned in this post is quite violent so it's time to change the mood. In Firewatch, you won't need to fire a rifle or stab crazed wolves with your knife. All you need to do is keep the watch, explore your surroundings, and try to solve the mystery of the Shoshone Forest. And watch the sunrise on the beach, of course.
