Rethinking Christmas
December has arrived and with this last month of the calendar comes Christmas, which has made us consider the possibility of reflecting on this festivity. Christmas, beyond being a religious holiday, is a complex cultural phenomenon that has evolved over time, leaving a deep imprint in various societies, if we think about it, Christmas has not always existed, had you considered that there was before?
That is why we wanted to invite you to reflect on this celebration from a humanistic perspective, exploring its many facets through the lenses of philosophy, anthropology, theology, sociology, history or from the discipline or perspective that you prefer.
In short, we would like to know what Christmas means to you?
Beyond gifts, family dinners and Christmas decorations, what does this time of year represent? Is it a time for spiritual reflection, an opportunity to strengthen social ties or simply a pause in the daily routine? We ask ourselves all this with the intention of creating a space for reflection and dialogue from the point of view of the humanities.
INITIATIVE:
In short, the initiative consists of reflecting on Christmas, knowing that there is total and full creative freedom, always from a humanities point of view. Of course you can share your personal reflection! And you can participate as many times as you wish.
But, as is our custom, we are going to suggest some ideas, but it is not obligatory or necessary to take as a starting point any of the ideas to participate. They are simply suggestions as a way to trigger ideas.
What is the origin of the most deeply rooted Christmas traditions in your culture? How have they evolved over time?
What role do Christmas symbols (tree, lights, gifts) play in constructing cultural meanings? Have these symbols changed throughout history?
How does Christmas influence social and family relationships; does it strengthen or weaken bonds?
What role does religion play in the celebration of Christmas? Is it possible to celebrate Christmas without a religious belief?
How has consumerism influenced the celebration of Christmas? What alternatives are there to excessive consumption?
What values do you consider most important at Christmas?
How has the way of celebrating Christmas changed in recent decades? What factors have influenced these changes?
What impact does globalization have on Christmas traditions? Does it homogenize or diversify celebrations?
What can we learn from other cultures about the celebration of Christmas? What traditions do you find most interesting or meaningful?
How can we make Christmas a more sustainable and environmentally friendly celebration?
