The Day I Discovered Drone Piloting From the Comfort of My Car

in Drone23 hours ago

Last Tuesday started like any other office day. Emails. Coffee. More emails. You know, the usual Groundhog Day routine. But then, a small miracle happened. The weather gods decided to bless us with a day that didn’t feel like a meteorological middle finger: no rain, no fog, no winds that could carry Dorothy and Toto off to Oz.

Finally, it was time to dust off the drone! (Okay, not literally, I keep it cleaner than a hospital waiting room. But you get the point.)

During my lunch break, I bolted out of the office like a kid on Christmas morning and drove to a quiet road in the middle of nowhere. A place where the only witnesses to my drone escapades would be some distant cows and maybe an annoyed bird or two.

The Art of Freezing for Creativity

I popped the frunk (because, of course, I drive an EV, because, well, welcome to 2025, my friends) and grabbed my drone. Now, this is where reality slapped me in the face. The temperature outside? Somewhere between "uncomfortably chilly" and "why did I leave the office?" Within seconds, my fingers felt like frozen breadsticks.

I thought, No way am I standing out here long enough to control this thing. I needed a solution. I needed... warmth.

And Then, A Genius Idea (or a "Why Didn’t I Think of This Before?" Moment)

As I stood shivering, contemplating whether I could operate the drone with my nose, I looked around. And there it was: my car’s glass roof, practically screaming at me, Dude, you have a front-row seat to the sky right here!

The idea hit me like a viral motivational quote: What if I could fly the drone from inside my car?

So, I hopped back in, turned up the seat warmer to "Grill," and got to work. With the drone up in the air, I was living the dream, controlling the camera and flight path while sipping my coffee in a cozy, wind-free sanctuary.

The Photos: Where Serenity Meets Slightly Overachieving

The drone soared above snow-dusted fields, capturing the kind of serene landscapes that make you want to slap some poetic quote about "the road less traveled" underneath them. (Seriously, look at the pics! Who wouldn’t want to buy a motivational calendar with these bad boys?)

Wind turbines in the distance, check. Quiet roads, double check. And that top-down shot of my car on the road? I’m pretty sure it’s chef’s kiss content for Instagram.

The Unexpected Tech Innovation

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room, or rather, the drone on my roof. When I landed the thing, I had a moment of pure 21st-century pride: the drone gracefully settled onto my glass roof like it was a helipad. Take that!!!

This was a vibe. Who needs to brave the cold when you can turn your car into a mobile drone command center? I felt like Tony Stark! If Tony Stark’s suit was a heated EV with Spotify playing in the background.

Lessons Learned (aka Why You Should Absolutely Do This)

  1. Get Creative, Even When It’s Cold: Sometimes, the best ideas happen when you're desperate for warmth.
  2. Use What You’ve Got: That glass roof you thought was just a fancy add-on? Turns out it’s also a perfect way to avoid frostbite while piloting your drone.
  3. Stay Inspired: There’s beauty everywhere, even on a random road in the middle of nowhere. You just need the right perspective.

So, next time you’re thinking about drone photography but dreading the weather, remember this: you don’t have to freeze your limbs off for great shots. Sometimes, all you need is a car with a view and a little outside-the-box thinking.

Now excuse me while I add "Drone Commander" to my LinkedIn profile!

Nice one! I used to fly from the truck (and my office chair) quite a bit in cold Vermont when I was there. I could fly all around our property there while in my nice warm office chair, even better with the FPV eyes on. Truck roof or bed not quite big enough to get comfort landing on it though!

Nice!!! To be honest, I tried the NEO as well from inside the car, with the FPV eyes on! Boy that was fun! Until the battery ran out, and it doesn't return to home, and it was stonecold, so it just landed where it was. Which, basically, was in the middle of one of the fields you see in these pictures. Yes indeed, in the snow! I've spent 30 minutes looking for the little bugger! :-D
I normally also don't land on the car's roof or hood, but I know I can if it's needed, if there is no other place available.
Vermont is a place I wouldn't mind flying over either I think ;-) (from within the heated car :-D )
