Elfin Cove | Alaska

in Drone3 months ago (edited)

100 hours of motoring later, and we have finally arrived in Glacier Bay, just before the southerly winds would start rolling in and making it impossible to make miles. We don't have good news: we now have milky oil in the starboard side sail drive. Didn’t really expect that to happen so quickly. Either way, we need to get that fixed quickly. It would be good to haul the boat out anyway since we have so much growth that it's reducing our speed by at least half a knot.

Elfin Cove has a population of seven people. In the winter, this place is dead. The place is very busy during the fishing season, and the town relies on the fishery. The bay offers great protection from all winds and has some stunning scenery. Today, we had a little potluck dinner with some of the locals and fishermen and got to know everybody, which was very nice after only hearing the hum of the engine for four days straight.

From here on, we won't have an overnight passage for a very long time since you can't travel at night due to the many dangers, like logs and ice from glaciers that float out. I'm glad we made it; it was very hard getting down since we are so late in the season, and the winds are very prevalent from the southeast.
