Whittier Alaska

in Drone3 months ago (edited)

Wow! It’s been a busy week, with lots of land travel through Alaska, but I’m back. We spent the whole day in Homer yesterday and left the boat in Whittier. We needed to get back quickly as there’s a tunnel that closes at 10:30 pm. The tunnel dates back about 100 years; it’s a one-way tunnel with rail tracks on it. Everything could be automated, but then people would lose their jobs, so it is what it is.

In true Alaska fashion, bears were literally walking around in the marina. Whittier, Alaska, is the closest boat ramp to Anchorage, so it’s very busy during the summer months with lots of people going fishing right at the heart of Prince William Sound. But it’s got to be one of the most beautiful harbours I’ve ever been to, so Whittier, Alaska, is now in my number one spot, with Sydney Harbour now retired from first place. 😀

The number of people who were so friendly, offering to take us to the shops or asking if we needed anything, was just amazing. Anyway, on the topic of pictures, this was one of the cruise ships we saw in Whittier. This one was a Holland America Line, and I think I’ve managed to capture some really beautiful photos.

Whittier, such a very curious (and strange) village. The whole population lives in a building, where also is the church, the little hospital, the doctor, the major... everything in this village is located in the big building that we may see in the background of the last picture. Is linked with Anchorage by train and with Valdez by a regular ferry.

On the other hand, nothing to do in Whittier but waiting for the train or ferry.

Very True it's a desolate place, thank you for stopping by.
