Drone Hyperlapse and More

in Drone4 months ago

I made several drone videos and pics at the Flagler Beach (Florida) reclamation project this weekend. Following the lead from @borniet I decided to take my drone with me on Sunday while doing some other errands.

I've been wanting to get more beach shots for awhile, and to check in on this beach reclamation project for the last month. Well, I finally was able to sneak some time in to take the drone out.

?share=copy The first shot here is a hyperlapse of the construction crew. It was shot with settings of a shot every 2 seconds, over about 8 minutes. It was over 250 photos automatically taken, then compiled automagically into the hyperlapse you see here. For this shot, I reduced the time between photos, and just let the drone hover in position while shooting instead of trying to fly around. It made for a much smoother shot this time vs. my last attempt.

This next one clearly shows the Old to new beach transformation. You can see the old narrow reddish color sand replaced by the much wider, more gray color sand.

This one is just another short look at the beach and comparing the old and new contrast.

Finally, here is a pull-away shot of the Flagler Beach Pier that also shows the construction and a portion of the completed area. Given the pace they are working, they should reach the pier today or later this week depending on the Hurricane Debbie delays. We're not getting much other than an extra few inches of rain, but you can see the clouds building up in the background.

and then of course a few still shots of the beach areas. This first one further South, where the restoration work already completed near the state park.

Looking out over the Atlantic Ocean.

In these, you can see areas already completed and the "new" beach area created at the gray line and beyond.

In the distance, you can see the Flagler Pier. I know the project is going up at least that far, but not sure if they are continuing North from there or if it will stop.

Here is a closer view of the pier. It is still closed due to damage from storms last year.

This last one you can really see how much wider the reclaimed beach is vs the narrow brown at the bottom right.

Water is not near as clear as normal, it is unusually dirty from all the dredging off-shore and being stirred up from the storm. Even though not our typical sunny day, I still enjoyed getting out very much and had a great time flying around!

I do have a much longer video that goes all the way from the state park up to the pier, but will save that for later. May put some music on that one :)

Very nice, I didn't know that a drone could stay so stable during such a long time.

Thanks and yes, some models like many of the DJI have built in stabilization that auto-corrects for wind, etc.
The wind was pretty strong this day, a pretty solid varying 10-15mph with some gusts up to 25 mph or so. This Mavic is a beast in the wind. It has a max speed of 42 mph or 68 kph (in sport mode). I've flown it easily in 30-35 mph winds. Have to be a little more careful around any objects of course, and be careful you leave extra battery to fly back if fighting a strong headwind. I was definitely getting some strong wind warnings several times from the sensors.

Yes @ksteem! Great content as always. Haven't experimented with waypoints yet but I can see them being used for creating the flight path in the second video, then in a few weeks time, splice in the finished beach at the end to show the transformation.

Yes, I've researched them a bit, and viewed several how-to videos, but have never played with them yet myself.
Would definitely be a good strategy for this type.

That's good to hear that you aren't going to be impacted too much by the hurricane. It will be interesting to see how this season turns out for all of that. It is amazing what they can accomplish in such a short amount of time.

Great stuff K !

I need a little yard reclamation...

Underwater right now. 1 acre pond has become 3+. Thanks Hurricane Debby 😡🤬😡

Yikes, I figured you were getting it heavier than us. It looks like the roofs are still on, so that's a good thing. At least it looks like the worst of it has blown up and out much faster than the original lingering expected. Looks like good duck calling weather.
