I remember feeling very embarrassed when they took this first picture I share with you above. It is about the 40th anniversary concert of the Orchestras and Choirs System, and all the guys in the picture, including my now wife in the left corner belonged to the national choir, all except me, I was only in the metropolitan choir, but the idea of this picture was that all of us from the nucleus of my hometown Maracay who had already managed to locate in Caracas would go out with our former director, the Lady in the middle of the picture. They all called me to be part of the picture. This was in February 2015, but today, week in which we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our institution I am happy to say that I got to the place where I always wanted to be, although it cost me a little more than my fellow countrymen. Recuerdo que me sentí muy avergonzado cuando tomaron esta primera fotografía que les comparto arriba. Se trata del concierto del 40 aniversario del Sistema de Orquestas y Coros, y todos los chicos en la foto, incluyendo mi ahora esposa en la esquina izquierda pertenecían a la coral nacional, todos menos yo, yo solo estaba en el coro metropolitano, pero la idea de esta foto era que todos los del núcleo de mi ciudad natal Maracay que ya habíamos logrado ubicarnos en Caracas saliéramos con nuestra antigua directora, la Señora en el medio de la foto. Todos me llamaron para que fuera parte de la fotografía. Esto fue en Febrero de 2015, pero hoy, semana en que celebramos el 50 aniversario de nuestra institución me alegra decir que llegué al lugar donde siempre quise, aunque me costó un poco más que a mis colegas paisanos. For those who do not know much about academic music, do not think that what you see in this picture above is normal, this is something very typical of our institution here in Venezuela, where massive concerts are held with an impressive number of musicians in the orchestra and choir. This was a concert where musicians from the foundation of the company 50 years ago to the newest ones like me participated, and a lot of music was played that day, Estevez, Handel, Beethoven and others. Many important personalities and stars of the Venezuelan show business were there, and also the presence of government executives. I do not remember the orchestra, but the great choir dressed in white was made up of singers from all over the country, so it was a reunion with my people from Aragua.
Para quienes no saben mucho de música académica, no crean que lo que ven en esta foto de arriba es normal, esto es algo muy de nuestra institución aquí en Venezuela, donde se hacen conciertos masivos con una cantidad impresionante de músicos en la orquesta y en el coro. Este fue un concierto donde participaron músicos desde la fundación de la empresa hace 50 años hasta los más nuevos como yo, y se hizo mucha música ese día, Estévez, Handel, Beethoven y demás. Muchas personalidades importantes y estrellas del espectáculo venezolano estuvieron ahí, y también la presencia de ejecutivos del gobierno. No recuerdo la orquesta, pero la gran coral vestida de blanco estaba integrada de cantantes de todo el país, por eso fue un reencuentro con mi gente de Aragua.
By 2015 I had been living in the city of Caracas for two years. I had two goals, one was to join the national choir and the other was to enter the music degree in the mention of popular singing, at least the second one I did achieve at the time, but one eventually made the other goal happen. The union of so many singers from all over the country was something very normal since the late 2000s and until 2014 approximately, in fact, this was the last time a national choir was made where they brought people from all states of the country, and is that the Caracas choir already had enough people and enough level to respond alone, and just this weekend, after 10 years, we are waiting for our colleagues from the interior of the country to join again in a single choir of about 600 people approximately to celebrate the 50th anniversary of El Sistema. I am very anxious, I finish writing this post and leave for the first rehearsal at the Teresa Carreño Theater. This week is a beautiful throwback to those early years that made me fall in love with academic music and the way this musical institution works.
Para el 2015 ya yo tenía dos años viviendo en la ciudad de Caracas. Tenía dos metas, una era ingresar a la coral nacional y la otra era ingresar a la licenciatura de música en la mención de canto popular, al menos la segunda sí la logré en su momento, pero una hizo que eventualmente se diera la otra meta. La unión de tantos cantantes de todo el país era algo muy normal desde finales de la década de los 2000 y hasta 2014 aproximadamente, de hecho, esta fue la última vez que se hizo un coro nacional donde traían a personas de todos los estados del país, y es que el coro de Caracas ya tenía la suficiente cantidad de personas y el suficiente nivel para responder solo, y justo este fin de semana, después de 10 años, estamos esperando a nuestros colegas del interior del país para volver a unirnos en un solo coro de unas 600 personas aproximadamente para celebrar los 50 años de El Sistema. Estoy muy ansioso, termino de escribir este post y salgo para el primer ensayo en el Teatro Teresa Carreño. Esta semana es todo un retroceso hermoso hacia esos primeros años que me hicieron enamorar de la música académica y de la manera de trabajar de esta institución musical.
