Black and White Melancholy/ Melancolía Blanco y Negro [Eng-Esp]

Like any other day for almost 40 years now, today I walked the streets of my old town. I have aged with my hometown, perhaps that is why it is so dear to me. My town is a small point on the map of Cuba, perhaps insignificant; nonetheless, I find the magic in it that can only be justified in memories. Where I grew up, its corners speak of my childhood, they make me go back to the past in its dusty essence. It is my own Macondo.

During my stroll down its usual street, I noticed, as I have before, the simple beauty of its architecture. Three centuries and a few more years have made it what it is. One after another, buildings have either been constructed or left in ruins for new ones to take their place. This is the case with one of the most representative places, to which my memories are also linked.

The parish church of Carmen de San Lorenzo de Aguacate was one of the first constructions in this place. Initially made of wood, it was devoured by fire, leaving parts of its altar made of precious woods devastated. Later reconstructed, it showcased the facade that these images captured by the lens of my mobile phone display with the same nostalgia that is engraved in its walls. Since the fateful incident, time has been wearing down its image and his facade suffered less happy modifications to adding spaces such as the sacristy, for example, that they have nothing to do with their central nave. How many stories will it not preserve? How many children played in its surroundings? How many times has its bell tower been the voice of mourning, celebration, the call that we all recognize and incorporate as that sound that tells us we are home.

Today, I had the pleasure of pausing to photograph this temple representing the local heritage, which, like the town itself, has been relegated to oblivion.

For my part, I refuse to let dust cover my affections. The parish church is charming to my eyes, it is also part of my life story, of my family's story... My nostalgic lens has paid this tribute, and I wanted to share some snapshots, in black and white, symbol of that battle between the past and the present refusing to die. With them, I begin a photographic series, " Black and White Melancholy," about these significant spaces for me, which, thanks to my artistic background, now take on new expressive meanings.

¿Cuántas historias no conservarán ?
