¡Feliz inicio de semana y felices Carnavales a quienes los celebran!
El fin de semana, estuve buscando unas referencias para una ilustración y me puse a ver Kotetsushin Jeeg y terminé viendo la serie sólo por ver las escenas de Kyou.
Esta serie no es de mis favoritas, ya que estuvo bastante alejada del concepto inicial de Kotetsu Jeeg, serie de Go Nagai creada a finales de los 70´s. También estuvo más encaminada al Ecchi que al Mecha por lo que algunas escenas se me hacían demasiado forzadas en la trama.
Sin embargo, el desarrollo de Kyou como un personaje fue algo que me gustó. Sus escenas son pocas pero está siempre presente en toda la serie. Es un joven con una personalidad misteriosa y muy reservado pero que tiene gran importancia y resuelve muchos de los enigmas que hay en la serie al momento de revelarse el secreto que esconde.
A pesar que Kotetsushin Jeeg no entra dentro de mis anime favoritos, artísticamente me pareció una propuesta interesante al mezclar el estilo de los 70´s con un estilo más actual (esta serie es del 2007).
En los últimos meses, he estado enfocada en aprender el estilo de anime retro de las series de los 70´s y 80´s, así que quise practicar algo un poco más contemporáneo.
Seleccioné la escena donde Kyou reta a Kenji en la cafetería a una competencia de motos. Ambos son estudiantes de la misma preparatoria. Kyou se presenta como el tìpico personaje antagónico del protagonista: el chico popular que todas las chicas admiran y que hace todo bien mientras que Kenji es un total desastre y en lo único que es bueno es en las carreras de motos.
Ambos son pilotos dentro del mismo equipo y en la última carrera, los dos llegaron en empate a la meta. Sólo uno de ellos puede ir a la competencia final, así que deciden hacer una competencia para decidirlo y Kyou lo reta en la cafetería para que se encuentren en la pista al final de las clases.
Esta competencia se inicia pero fue suspendida cuando un monstruo o los llamados "Haniwa Genjin" aparece de pronto haciendo que ambos tengan que dejar la competencia a medias. Esto es de un valor emocional relevante en el capítulo donde se revela el secreto de Kyou.
Así que quise hacer una versión de esa escena. La escena original está enfocada desde un ángulo inferior apuntando hacia el lado izquierdo porque Kenji está sentado a la mesa mientras que Kyou, quien es bastante alto, está de pie. Quise hacerlo de modo que ambos estuvieran de pie y hacer la escena en perspectiva de un punto de fuga.
A diferencia del anime de finales de los 70´s donde el lineart se hacía con lápiz y papel para ser fotocopiado en los acetatos dándole a los acercamientos la textura del lápiz en las líneas, ya a finales de los 90´s se usaban programas digitales para hacer el clean up y el coloreado, así que esta vez, en lugar de usar la brocha de lápiz, busqué una plumilla que simulara el trazo vectorizado.
Podría haberlo hecho con una capa de vectores en Clip Studio, pero quise aprender a darle el look sin usar ese recurso.
En el caso de la escenografía, lo hice con brochas de acuarela. Muchos de los fondos en esa serie eran hechos con CGI, así que lo más próximo que pude lograr fue renderizarlo con acabado de acuarela.

Me falta aprender a darle el look delgado que tenían los personajes que es muy similar al que se usa en el Shojo. Sin embargo, es uno de los estilos que más me ha costado aprender a dibujar ya que siempre me he dedicado al shounen.

Over the weekend, I was looking for references for an illustration and started watching Kotetsushin Jeeg, ending up watching the series just to see Kyou's scenes.
This series is not one of my favorites, as it strayed quite far from the original concept of Kotetsu Jeeg, a series by Go Nagai created in the late 70s. It also leaned more toward Ecchi than Mecha, which made some scenes feel overly forced in the plot.
However, the development of Kyou as a character was something I liked. His scenes are few, but he is always present throughout the series. He is a young man with a mysterious and very reserved personality, but he plays a significant role and solves many of the enigmas in the series when his hidden secret is revealed.
Even though Kotetsushin Jeeg is not among my favorite anime, artistically, it seemed like an interesting proposal by mixing the style of the 70s with a more contemporary style (this series is from 2007).
In recent months, I have been focused on learning the retro anime style of the 70s and 80s series, so I wanted to practice something a bit more contemporary.
I selected the scene where Kyou challenges Kenji in the cafeteria to a motorcycle race. Both are students at the same high school. Kyou presents himself as the typical antagonistic character to the protagonist: the popular guy that all the girls admire and who does everything right, while Kenji is a total disaster and the only thing he is good at is motorcycle racing.
Both are racers on the same team, and in the last race, they both crossed the finish line in a tie. Only one of them can go to the final competition, so they decide to hold a race to determine who it will be, and Kyou challenges him in the cafeteria to meet on the track after classes.
This competition starts but is suspended when a monster, the so-called "Haniwa Genjin," suddenly appears, forcing both of them to leave the competition unfinished. This moment holds significant emotional value in the chapter where Kyou's secret is revealed.
So, I wanted to create a version of that scene. The original scene is focused from a low angle pointing to the left side because Kenji is sitting at the table while Kyou, who is quite tall, is standing. I wanted to depict both of them standing and create the scene in one-point perspective.
Unlike the anime from the late 70s, where line art was done with pencil and paper to be photocopied onto acetate, giving close-ups the texture of pencil in the lines, by the late 90s, digital programs were used for cleanup and coloring. So this time, instead of using a pencil brush, I looked for a nib that simulated vectorized strokes.
I could have done it with a vector layer in Clip Studio, but I wanted to learn how to achieve the look without using that resource.
For the scenery, I used watercolor brushes. Many of the backgrounds in that series were done with CGI, so the closest I could achieve was rendering it with a watercolor finish.

I still need to learn how to give the thin look that the characters had, which is very similar to what is used in Shojo. However, it is one of the styles that has been the hardest for me to learn to draw since I have always focused on shounen.
