The Final Your Top 3 Contest
It's been a wonderful 21 months working with @cheese4ead, @plantstoplanks and @foxyspirit on this contest, along with head honcho Q of course! We started talking about our favourite movies randomly and as time went on, we developed @yourtop3 and it turned into a beast of a contest with multiple leagues, amazing prizes (we've given away over $300 worth!), awesome sponsorship and great support from everyone who entered.
So thank you to everyone who took part and made it possible, we had a lot of fun getting to know you all! It definitely seemed appropriate that the final topic of the contest is on a similar vein of how we started - Oscar/Academy Award Winning Movies.
My Top 3 Academy Award Winning Movies
I mean how Shaun of the Dead doesn't feature in the big old list on Wikipedia is beyond me, otherwise that would have been right at the top! The running joke is that Shaun of the Dead has pretty much featured in every movie themed contest as one of my nominations, couldn't leave it out this time round either 😂
Anyway, here are my top 3 Oscar/Academy Award Winning Movies:
Interstellar (2014)
I remember seeing this on a plane as I was travelling back from USA at the time. I'd never seen it before and probably should have seen it on the big screen but I had a long 10 hour flight ahead of me so had to fill the time and this looked pretty cool! It was a lot more than that though! With a promise of special effects to "blow my mind", I was in, even though the background noise of the engines were always there and the screen was practically squashing my nose thanks to the person in front ramming their seat back as far as possible!
The film is set in a post apocalyptic world to begin with and we follow astronauts around who search for a new home, travelling through wormholes and landing on planets that are completely crazy compared to what we're used to here on Earth. Hopefully I'll be able to watch this on a bigger screen (and not with my nose right up against it)!
Interstellar won an Academy Award for "Best Visual Effects" in 2014.
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
I can't believe this came out as I started Uni but it was one of the first films our halls of residence watched together as we were bonding in that first semester if I remember rightly! I may have seen it once or twice since but the film stuck with me and it's got a good story line with an iconic tune that every one seemed to be singing along to called Paper Planes "All I wanna do is bang bang bang bang and kerching take your monayyy" and Jai Ho!
The story is actually based around an Indian version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", a TV game show where you answer 15 questions correctly and progressively work towards the top prize, in the film's case, 20 million rupees. Before the final questions, the main character is detained and tortured by police who accuse him of cheating but you learn through a series of flashbacks how the 18 year old came to know the answers but do they believe him? Watch and find out!
Slumdog Millionaire won 8 Academy Awards including "Best Picture" in 2008.
L.A. Confidential (1997)
I never thought I'd put a film like this on my top 3 but there's something about this film that made me want to watch it over and over, despite not even being a teenager the time it came out! A thrilling crime film set in the 1950s telling the story of police corruption in Los Angeles. There are so many sub plots and characters that make this an enthralling watch, you can't turn away otherwise you'll miss the context of the scene!
The main event is a robbery with multiple homicides with one of the affiliates of the main characters getting caught up. This leads to an investigation into the corruption involved and unravels a whole undercurrent of dodgy dealings with more twists than a corkscrew! I think I'll have to whip out the DVD and watch this one again!
L.A. Confidential won 2 Academy Awards in 1997
Now It's Your Final Turn
This is the final contest we'll be running so you might as well enter for a chance to win HBD prizes on top of the usual post payouts for entering (along with some engaging comments too)! Full information on how to enter is on the contest introduction post here!
What are your top 3 Oscar/Academy Award winning movies? Did any of these make your picks? Let me know in the comments below and look forward to reading your entry posts - be sure to get them in before the deadline of the 9th!
Happy watching!

Oh Shaun, he had to get one more mention! Hey, nothing wrong knowing what we like. That's the whole point of the top 3, right? I'm sure we'll have many more unofficial chats ahead, just without Q to moderate. What a journey it has been.
Some epic choices. Interstellar was one we actually did see in theaters. DKS and I rarely go, but when we do we try to see a flick like that where it is totally worth it to see on the big screen! I really enjoyed Slumdog millionaire, too. Such a fascinating story and it was so well cast. Now I'm trying to remember if I ever saw your last pick. I think I probably have, but might need to give it another watch to jog my memory. 🤔

Haha, yeah I definitely abused my Panel rights a few times with my nominations but if Q didn't like what he saw, I'm sure he'd have said something 😃 Definitely going to be keeping in contact with you all for sure!
I'm envious of the cinema experience you had with Interstellar! Would have loved to see that on the big screen, think I'll have to get the Blu-Ray and watch it on at least a slightly bigger screen than what I watched it on!
I'll also be trying to catch up with all these movies, box sets and other things we've seen shared across the last couple of years from everyone in Your Top 3! There were some awesome choices!
What a nice selection, @nickyhavey!
Three strong contenders here. Definitely.
Thanks a lot mate! Wonder if anyone else will pick them... 😃
Thanks for continuing to make Hive awesome.
