Is it feasible to save today? It's a question that both you and I have been asking ourselves this year and to which there is not just 1 answer. In the following post we will talk about savings, types of savings and comparison versus investment from an empirical point of view.
We will skip defining what savings is, because we all at some point in our lives knew its meaning, in my case my first approach was as a child without knowing exactly what it was. When I was a child, my grandmother had a store where she sold candy, sweets, sodas, among other things, so while I was at home I helped her sell, at the end of the day she counted the money, took some of it and kept it in a piggy bank, which she broke as time went by and used that money to buy things. As time went by, I grew up seeing this example and I began to put it into practice when I was given my allowance, or when I had some change left over after buying something at the school canteen.
This was later used to buy more candy or other more expensive treats.
Much later, as an adult and with my first job, I used the savings to pay for college, courses, buy clothes and even attend digital marketing workshops.
This means that, although saving is a voluntary action, it requires certain habits that facilitate its implementation throughout our lives. According to its function, there are several types of savings, such as:
- Saving for emergencies: This is usually the type of savings that you and I prefer not to have, for obvious reasons.
- Saving for an objective: Taking a percentage of your income and allocating it to a specific activity or purpose.
- Cushion savings: Generally used as a backup for unforeseen events such as: becoming unemployed, migrating, etc.
In my case I do not use my savings in this way, I have my own criteria based on investment, and that is precisely what I will talk about now. Investment, in general terms, seeks to multiply or make something profitable, there are many types of investment but I will not go deeper into the subject because I am not a specialist in the area.
On the contrary, I will talk about what I have personally put into practice, how it has worked for me and how you could adapt or improve it as the case may be. It should be noted that everything I have said is based on my personal experience. Now, every investment responds to 2 forces that keep it in balance:
- The first is that it must be self-sufficient, i.e. it must generate profitability and capital growth.
- The second is rather a principle, which reminds us that first it is in order to be, that is to say, to invest you must first save.
Knowing this, the first thing I did was to use my savings wisely and make them generate interest, while using my digital marketing knowledge as a second source of income. A source of income that allowed me to not only survive during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, but was also part of the seed capital for my venture in 2022. This series of actions have generated the current distribution:
