My first mission
The first mission for my first day on the job was to learn the ropes. I started with a complete orientation. I learned how to properly and safely handle the bakery’s equipment and ingredients, as well as food sanitary awareness and a thorough understanding of my assigned duties. This thorough orientation was a valuable training opportunity which gave me a better understanding and appreciation for the craftsmanship of the Bakery’s team even though I wasn't very good at doing everything I was taught, I knew I'll get better with time.
The good part of my experience
During this experience, I watched in awe as my mentor mixed ingredients, trimmed edges and frosted layers with care and precise movements to make every cake picture-perfect. I also saw how patience and attention to detail play a part in baking; as she carefully designed intricate patterns on the fondant decorations of tiered wedding cakes.
I then tried carving out my own designs on the cupcakes which went well. I was told to start with the little aspect of learning the design before doing the big jobs so as to gain mastery.
The awful experience
This was an experience with the oven and the heat of the oven.
Each time I was sent to get a pastery from the oven, before I could get it out, I would sweat profusely due to the immense heat released from the oven and most at times get myself burnt from the oven edges. I didn't have the skills and tactics to handle the oven. However, my mentor taught me the oven setting procedure, how to safely get items out and other safety guidelines for a successful oven handling and practice. I can say that I'm better now but it wasn't very easy.
Offering assistance and learning in the process
I then went on to help the other bakers with their tasks. One of the more exciting ones was mixing things like cocoa, flour and sugar in the mixing bowl. With a few drops of color and lots of stirring, I saw how these colors could be blended together to create a unique and beautiful design for the next cake.
The day was so exciting and unique, before I knew it, I was packing up my work to head home. I was filled with satisfaction, pride and a real sense of accomplishment.
It is fair to say that my first day of working in a bakery was an amazing experience. Not only did I learn important elements and guidelines of baking, but I also experienced the team spirit and joy of working and learning with fellow bakers. It was a great day and the start of something special.
I was unable to take photos during my training so I sourced my photos from source
The best of me is yet to come
I love it, I think it would be a job I would love to do, although the smell of freshly baked bread would drive me crazy with the desire to eat it, hahahahahaha.
I can imagine how difficult it must be to handle a bakery oven, if my home oven is complicated, I don't want to imagine one of that magnitud. I hope you continue to have good days in your new job and that you manage to learn a lot of things.
Regards ✌️
