I hope you had a nice weekend. Mine was quite busy with household chores, although at home we share the responsibilities, which makes everything more bearable. Weekends are for catching up on what we left pending during the week, organizing orders and checking that we have all the necessary supplies for our small chocolate business to run smoothly. In addition, I always take the opportunity to accompany my son on some of the deliveries, which allows us to spend time together and relax.
On this occasion, a recurring client who lives on Aguiar Street, near Callejón de los Peluqueros, in Old Havana, placed an order with us this Saturday and since I like that area a lot, I accompanied him. While my son made the delivery, I decided to stay a few blocks before to take a closer look at the Santo Ángel Custodio church. This church, located on Loma del Ángel, is a true architectural and historical treasure of Cuba. Founded in 1689, it has witnessed many important events over the centuries.

Espero que hayan tenido un lindo fin de semana. El mío estuvo bastante ocupado con las tareas del hogar, aunque en casa nos repartimos las responsabilidades, lo que hace todo más llevadero. Los fines de semana son para ponernos al día con lo que dejamos pendiente durante la semana, organizar los pedidos y comprobar que tenemos todos los suministros necesarios para que nuestro pequeño negocio de chocolates funcione sin problemas. Además, siempre aprovecho para acompañar a mi hijo en alguna de las entregas, lo que nos permite pasar tiempo juntos y relajarnos.
En esta ocasión, un cliente recurrente que vive en la calle Aguiar, cerca del Callejón de los Peluqueros, en La Habana Vieja, nos hizo un pedido este sábado y como me gusta mucho esa zona, lo acompañé. Mientras mi hijo hacía la entrega, decidí quedarme unas cuadras antes para conocer de cerca la iglesia del Santo Ángel Custodio. Esta iglesia, ubicada en la Loma del Ángel, es un verdadero tesoro arquitectónico e histórico de Cuba. Fundada en 1689, ha sido testigo de muchos acontecimientos importantes a lo largo de los siglos.
This church is a fascinating example of the neo-Gothic style, with a spire-shaped tower and pointed doors that highlight its unique design. Although I knew it was closed and I could not access its interior, my interest in visiting it was due to everything that can be seen on the outside. In front of the church is a statue of “Cecilia Valdés”, the main character of the work of the great writer Cirilo Villaverde, written in 1882. This work of art in bronze, created by the talented Cuban sculptor Erig Rebull, faithfully captures the essence of the Cuban mestizo woman of those times.
The novel "Cecilia Valdés" is one of the first I read after leaving children's books behind. This masterpiece not only tells a story of love and heartbreak, but also offers a deep look at the traits and taboos of Cuban colonial society. The statue, with its serene gaze and elegant posture, seems to tell the same stories of passion and conflict that Villaverde captured in his book. It is not only a tribute to a literary character, but also a symbol of Cuba's rich cultural and artistic heritage. Looking at the statue, I remembered the pages of the novel that had such an impact on me.
Esta iglesia es un fascinante ejemplo del estilo neogótico, con una torre en forma de aguja y puertas ojivales que resaltan su singular diseño. Aunque sabía que estaba cerrada y no podía acceder a su interior, mi interés por visitarla se debió a todo lo que se puede apreciar en su exterior. Frente a la iglesia se encuentra una estatua de “Cecilia Valdés”, personaje principal de la obra del gran escritor Cirilo Villaverde, escrita en 1882. Esta obra de arte en bronce, creada por el talentoso escultor cubano Erig Rebull, captura fielmente la esencia de la mujer mestiza cubana de aquellos tiempos.
La novela "Cecilia Valdés" es una de las primeras que leí después de dejar atrás los libros infantiles. Esta obra maestra no solo narra una historia de amor y desamor, sino que también ofrece una profunda mirada a los rasgos y tabúes de la sociedad colonial cubana. La estatua, con su mirada serena y postura elegante, parece contar las mismas historias de pasión y conflicto que Villaverde plasmó en su libro. No solo es un homenaje a un personaje literario, sino también un símbolo de la rica herencia cultural y artística de Cuba. Mirando la estatua, recordaba las páginas de la novela que tanto me impactaron.
On the opposite sidewalk, there is a bust of the great writer Cirilo Villaverde, with a plaque that highlights his values and performance as a critic and journalist. In addition to the values of this work that reflects what Havana was like in the 19th century.

Between the statue of Cecilia Valdés and the bust of Cirilo Villaverde, there is a small cobbled square, which was rescued and preserved by the Office of the City Historian, trying to maintain that environment as it was described in the novel.

On the corner, there is a gastronomic centre called: Café La Loma del Angel, with several tables and umbrellas arranged on the cobblestones of the square, where many tourists sit to taste their dishes and appreciate the place. It is like opening the pages of Villaverde's masterpiece and finding this square; the atmosphere that surrounds it evokes those times.
En la esquina hay un centro gastronómico llamado: Café La Loma del Ángel, con varias mesas y sombrillas dispuestas sobre los adoquines de la plaza, donde se sientan muchos turistas a degustar sus platos y apreciar el lugar. Es como abrir las páginas de la obra maestra de Villaverde y encontrarte con esta plaza; la atmósfera que la rodea evoca aquellos tiempos.
I hope you feel attracted by this little corner of Havana that gives off so much magic, it seems as if it had been frozen in time.

Si amiga esa espectacular novela la tengo en mi mente desde muy joven , tiene unos pasajes espectaculares especialmente en ese lugar
