El síndrome de Down es una alteración genética. En ella, la persona tiene 47 cromosomas, en vez de los 46 usuales. La mayoría de los casos tienen una copia extra del cromosoma 21, de ahí que también se le llame “Trisomía 21”.
Tener una copia extra cambia la forma en que el cuerpo y el cerebro del bebé se desarrolla, de ahí que el Síndrome de Down tenga efectos sobre las características físicas, la salud y el aprendizaje.
Hoy se presentó la exposición de artes plásticas “Mi mundo" que refleja las capacidades, visión y sentimientos de una persona con esta condición.
En la exhibición participaron miembros del Consejo Nacional de Casas de Cultura, el colectivo del proyecto Quisicuaba y de la Asociación Cubana de las Naciones Unidas, entre otros.
Lien Agrelo Pons, autora de las obras presentadas, expresó que esta exposición se llama “Mi mundo”
porque en ella se refleja la familia, los sentimientos y la realidad desde el ámbito más personal.
Ella definió su mundo como un lugar de colores y alegrías, donde no hay espacio para las diferencias y donde cada persona es capaz de hacer lo que se proponga sin importar sus características.
Lien Agrelo Pons, una joven artista y apasionada por la vida, es un ejemplo de que las personas con alguna discapacidad también pueden superarse y tienen mucho para dar a una sociedad que en ocasiones frena el desarrollo de sus potencialidades.
Cada 21 de marzo se conmemora el Día Mundial del Síndrome de Down como una fecha para concientizar a la humanidad y entender que todas las personas son iguales y merecen las mismas oportunidades.

Every March 21, World Down Syndrome Day is commemorated as a date to raise awareness among humanity and to understand that all people are equal and deserve the same opportunities.
