Night shifts are hard

in Lifestyle5 months ago

Even after two months of working night shifts, I still haven't had a single day off.
We can't find a worker who could occasionally cover for me when I'm not working, and the other guards are stationed elsewhere, around the hotel, at the pool to prevent anyone from swimming at night because chemicals are added to the pool overnight that can cause skin rashes.
These chemicals are used to destroy what has accumulated during the day and to prevent algae from forming at the edges of the pool, so there's no one to replace me.

To make matters worse, I've now lost the main lighting in the camp because a fuse probably blew somewhere, and the maintenance worker doesn't arrive until 7 a.m., which is exactly 7 hours from now as I write this since it's exactly midnight.
Now I'm just waiting for the unfortunate people who paid for all this to come and complain to me that they don't have air conditioning in their cabins, and there's nothing I can do about it. Outside, it's now 25 degrees Celsius, there's no wind, and the humidity is high, so without air conditioning, it's really tough, especially if you have small children or if you're older or sick.

I've already walked around the camp three times to check if everything is okay and to let people see me so they don't get scared thinking no one is watching while everything is in the dark.
Here in the cabin at the camp entrance where I am, luckily, there is electricity because the upper part of the camp is separated from the lower part, which is right on the beach.
I'm also lucky that I made a thermos full of coffee at home, so I don't have to burden the fuses even more for that.

Of course, there are far too many mosquitoes, and without mosquito repellent, it would be hard to endure the night shift.
At the entrance to the cabin where I am, I also light a mosquito coil to help a bit more. Even though they sprayed them five days ago, there are now even more of them, and they're more aggressive, as if they're becoming immune to the chemicals they spray twice a year.

This will be a long and, I think, quite difficult, if not the hardest night so far, not so much because of me but because of the people who will come to complain to me, and unfortunately, I am helpless.
