A New Beginning
That same evening, the neighbor dropped another bombshell. She could no longer keep Patch—her landlord had found out about the cat and insisted she get rid of her. She didn’t know what to do.
Now there was no doubt. Patch had been abandoned.

Tego samego wieczoru sąsiadka przekazała nam kolejną wiadomość. Nie mogła dłużej trzymać Patch – jej właściciel mieszkania dowiedział się o kocie i zażądał, aby się go pozbyła. Nie wiedziała, co z nią zrobić.
Teraz nie mieliśmy już wątpliwości. Patch została porzucona.
The nights were getting colder, and my partner made a decision—there was no way we were sending Patch back outside anymore. That night, she wrapped Patch in a blanket and let her sleep in the living room until morning.
When we woke up, we worried about the mess she might have made—but there was none. Patch had behaved perfectly. From that day forward, she stayed in our flat every night, from the moment we got home until the next morning. She never caused any trouble.

Noce robiły się coraz zimniejsze, a moja partnerka podjęła decyzję – nie mogliśmy już dłużej wyrzucać Patch na dwór. Tego wieczoru owinęła ją kocem i zostawiła w salonie na noc.
Gdy rano wstaliśmy, martwiliśmy się, czy kotka nie narobiła bałaganu. Ale nic takiego się nie stało. Patch była idealnie grzeczna. Od tego dnia zostawała u nas każdej nocy, od chwili naszego powrotu do rana. Nigdy nie sprawiała problemów.
A few days later, my partner brought home a cozy cat bed just for Patch. The moment Patch spotted it, she walked straight over as if she knew it was hers. She curled up inside, purring so loudly it sounded like a tiny engine revving up.
For a while, we convinced ourselves that Patch’s belly was just her normal size. Maybe we were overthinking it. But by early December, we had to face the truth—Patch was pregnant.

Kilka dni później moja partnerka przyniosła dla niej miękkie, ciepłe legowisko. Patch zobaczyła je i natychmiast do niego podeszła, jakby wiedziała, że to dla niej. Wślizgnęła się do środka, położyła się i zaczęła głośno mruczeć.
Przez chwilę próbowaliśmy się oszukiwać. Może jej brzuch jest po prostu trochę większy? Może przesadzamy? Ale na początku grudnia musieliśmy spojrzeć prawdzie w oczy – Patch była w ciąży.
A Christmas Surprise
We didn’t know what to do. We called the RSPCA and numerous cat rescue charities, but every single one turned us away. No available space. No help.
And then, on the night of Saturday, December 21st, Patch became restless. She paced around the apartment, meowing anxiously, her body tense. Instinctively, we knew what was happening—she was getting ready to give birth.

Nie mieliśmy pojęcia, co robić. Dzwoniliśmy do RSPCA i do wielu organizacji zajmujących się ratowaniem kotów, ale wszędzie słyszeliśmy to samo – brak miejsc.
A potem, w sobotę 21 grudnia, wieczorem, Patch zaczęła się niepokoić. Chodziła po mieszkaniu, miauczała nerwowo, jej ciało było napięte. Instynktownie wiedzieliśmy, co się dzieje – poród się zbliżał.
By 1 AM, we gently placed her in her bed. A little while later, she started moaning softly. We comforted her, stroking her gently, speaking to her in soothing tones. She responded with deep, loud purrs, as if thanking us for being there.
At 1:30 AM, the first kitten was born.
Every time she cried out, we reassured her. One by one, her babies arrived. By 4:30 AM, she finally settled, exhausted but content, curled around three tiny, black kittens.

O 1:00 w nocy delikatnie umieściliśmy ją w jej legowisku. Wkrótce potem zaczęła cicho jęczeć. Głaskaliśmy ją, mówiliśmy do niej spokojnym głosem. Odpowiadała głośnym mruczeniem, jakby dziękowała nam za wsparcie.
O 1:30 na świat przyszło pierwsze kociątko.
Za każdym razem, gdy Patch miauczała, byliśmy obok. Kolejne maluchy rodziły się jedno po drugim. O 4:30 wszystko się uspokoiło – policzyliśmy trzy maleńkie, czarne kocięta.
We were in awe. It had all gone smoothly—no complications, no problems. It was the first time in our lives we had witnessed anything like this, and the experience left us speechless.
When we woke up later that morning, the first thing we did was check on Patch and her little ones. They were all snuggled together, sleeping peacefully in their bed. But then my partner counted them again and gasped.
“We have four kittens, not three.”

Byliśmy zachwyceni. Poród przebiegł bez żadnych komplikacji. Nigdy wcześniej nie byliśmy świadkami takiego cudu i zostaliśmy kompletnie oczarowani tym doświadczeniem.
Gdy rano się obudziliśmy, pierwsze, co zrobiliśmy, to sprawdziliśmy Patch i jej maluchy. Leżały wtulone w siebie, cicho śpiąc. Ale wtedy moja partnerka policzyła je jeszcze raz i nagle wstrzymała oddech.
„Mamy cztery kocięta, nie trzy.”
Sometime after we had gone to bed, Patch had delivered her final baby.
Patch’s journey had taken her from an unwanted stray to a loving mother once again. And now, in the warmth of our home, under the glow of Christmas lights, she had given life to four tiny miracles.
But what would happen next?

Okazało się, że w nocy, gdy już spaliśmy, Patch urodziła jeszcze jedno maleństwo.
Z bezdomnej, niechcianej kotki, Patch znów stała się matką. A my, w świetle świątecznych lampek, patrzyliśmy na ten mały cud – jej cztery bożonarodzeniowe kocięta.
Ale co teraz?
Ciąg dalszy nastąpi…
