These weeks just fly by dont they? #Beersaturday is here again. This week I'm going to review two dark beers, a Stout and a Porter. In combining a slight mishap with one beer and a unique flavor of another, I came up with the catchy title above. What do you think? Lets check out my cherry bomb review, shall we.
Blak Katt
Brewery: County Durham Brewing Co
Origin: Pickering ON Canada
Style: Irish Style Stout
Abv: 5.7%
IBU: Unknown
SRM: Unknown
Marketing: The can is a pastel yellow color with black, grey and blue accents. It has bold lettering and a scribbly black cat design image. Instructions on the side say to shake the beer before pouring which is interesting.
I like the can design a lot. I think it's funky and hip and I'm intrigued, albeit a little scared, by the instructions to shake the can before pouring.
I'm going to trust the process and give it a go though.
The can went from soft and mildly squishy to hard as a rock when I shook it... okay don't over think what I'm saying here please 😂
Okay as one might expect, the shaking made a bit of a mess when I cracked the top.
It didn't explode but definitely popped with fizz all over my hands, the can and the counter it was sitting on. Again, please keep your mind out of the gutter here 😅
That was the "bomb" inspiration in the title if who hadn't gathered that already.
Color: The beer poured a dark black color with a nice nitro reverse waterfall action. There was a lot more foam than normal - from the shaking no doubt.
The liquid was almost opaque with just a hint of a dark brown-redish hue around the edges of the glass where the loght hit it.
The head of foam was thick and hearty and stuck around for a long time. I could write my name in the foam if I wanted to.
Nose: The beer was quite fragrant with roasted notes and an aroma that I could't place but was nonetheless very pleasant.
Taste: The beer had very little sweetness and was mildly dry. There was some tanginess to it but was not as sour as a Guinness. It was mildly bitter in the finish as well. It was well balanced overall. I got a lot of Stout flavors - Roasted notes, smokiness, and leather in the background. I got a very subtle fruity quality in the background as well.
Texture: The texture was smooth and watery like most nitro beers but it did have a subtle carbonated feel to it as well.
Impression: This was a very good Stout in my opinion. It had a lot of flavor and it's own distinct character that made it stand out for me among the many stout beers that I've drank. It had a higher than usual ABV which was nice as well. I would definitely buy this one again but I don't think that I would bother shaking it next time around. I don't know how much of a difference the shaking made to the drinking experience and though the mess it made was small, it was just enough to be annoying. I couldn't tell if it was a marketing ploy or actually functional. Anyway, I wouldn't hold that against the beer, I just wouldn't bother doing it next time around. Great beer overall!
Macleans Cherry Porter
Brewery: Macleans Brewing Co
Origin: Collingwood ON Canada
Style: Flavored Porter
Abv: 5.6%
IBU: Unknown
SRM: Unknown
Marketing: The can was black with pale yellow and deep amber red accents. Brand logo style design front and center with a cherry image. Sort of a classic traditional pub style beer look about it.
The back has a little marketing blurb, nothing special and no additional information about the beer, but fine nonetheless.
This is the cherry inspo part of the title, obviously...
Color: Deep amber / ruby red color with a tan colored head. The liquid looked clear.
Nose: Not a lot in the nose but I got some mild roasted notes.
Taste: Not a lot of sweetness, almost dry. A decent amount of tanginess, maybe even mildly sour. Decent bitterness to balance it all out. I got a little bit of cherry flavor but not a lot. It was very subtle which I actually prefer. I was worried that it would be fake and overwhelming in the cherry taste but it was just enough in my opinion.
Texture: Decent carbonation. Small micro bubble feel and silky underneath. Medium bodied mouthfeel overall.
Impression: I thought it was a bit boring at first with not a lot going on but it really grew on me the more I drank it. I liked that the cherry flavor was subtle and it had a nice amount of tangy/sour-ness (not too much and not too little). I liked this beer a lot actually. I would buy it again for sure.
A pair of smashers!! I love the look of the first one although they're is no way in hell I would have shook it!
Such filthy talk in a review, not for the faint of heart 🤣🤣
I like the subtly flavoured ones too and not the overboard saccharin fake sweetness you sometimes get
I wanted to trust the process but deep down I knew that it was a bad idea 😂😅
I debated whether or not I should use emjois to tell the story 🍆💧 and the like 🤔 🤣
I agree. Out of the ordinary flavors in beer have to be subtle otherwise they taste fake and awful.
Haha, emojis would have taken it beyond the pale!
I have been there, following done process knowing it will end badly for me 🤣🤣
That's why your posts are so good though 😂👌
Hehe, cheers!
