Another #Beersaturday has come at last and so it's time for another leaky20 review. Instead of stout beers I'll be reviewing some golden lagers. I hope you enjoy.
Enjoy Lakeside Kolsch
Brewery: Lake of the Woods Brewing Company
Origin: Kenora ON Canada
Style: Canadian version of a German Kolsch
Abv: 5.0%
IBU: 6
SRM: 3
Marketing: A beautiful turquoise colored can with silver and white accents. Boat motor image in line with the brewerys lake theme.
Marketing blurb on the back and additional info about the beer listed on the can, which is great. The name is sort of awkward with "Enjoy" written before Lakeside. Is it a title or a command? It would have been better to put that before the phrase at the bottom of the can that states "Light, refreshing taste." If they turned that into "Enjoy a light refreshing taste" then everything would make sense. But what do I know really? All of that being said, I still really like the design overall.
Color: Pale yellow in color, moving toward golden. A white head of foam that dissolved rapidly as I poured it. Hazy and unfiltered looking.
Nose: Fresh and clean aroma. Hoppy, with notes of citrus and fruit. I can't make out specifics in what I'm smelling but everything is good. A pleasant aroma to say the least.
Taste: There is a very mild sweetness up front with a decent amount of tanginess in the middle. The finish has only a mild bitterness. I noticed some pine flavors and a fruitiness reminiscent of apples.
Texture: Nice carbonation with a light bodied almost watery mouthfeel underneath.
Impression: Overall I thought that this was a great beer. It was fresh tasting with a great amount of flavor and it had a summery quality about it that I liked a lot. Whether it is in fact in line with a German Kolsch, I cannot say But a good beer that I would buy again for sure.
Deluxe Golden Lager
Brewery: Burdock Brewery
Origin: Toronto ON Canada
Style: Golden Lager
Abv: 4.5
IBU: Unknown
SRM: Unknown
Marketing: Burnt red and cream colored can. Brassy copper lettering. Simplistic fountain design logo. The can has a traditional look about it. It's a bit boring but there is an appeal to it. It's Grandpa chic.
Color: A golden straw yellow color with a foamy head of tightly packed bubbles.
Nose: Malty with notes of bread, hay, toffee and cereals.
Taste: Mildly sweet and bitter in equal amounts. Cereals and grain flavors.
Texture: Light carbonation with tiny soft textured bubbles. Light bodied slightly watery mouthfeel.
Impression: The beer was alright. Nothing special but enjoyable to drink. I was a little back and forth at times thinking it was a quality product using good ingredients and a slightly cheap one that was a little stale. Maybe it was old or getting there? Overall I did enjoy the beer but wouldn't buy it again just because there are other, better golden lagers that I would buy instead.
Diner with Beer
For dinner that night I made garlic chicken using chicken broth, white wine, herbs and a full head of garlic.
Brown chicken.
Cook vegetables part way through.
Add wine, broth and herbs.
Put in the oven to continue cooking and to crisp up the skin. Enjoy!
Finally, the garlic chicken!!! I only came here for that 😀
Haha thats understandable. It turned out pretty good.
I always take "enjoy!" asa command 😃
That first one looks great!
Yeah that's true 😂
The first one was the better of the two for sure.
It looked it, puts me in the mood for beer!!
Always in the mood for beer 😋
Cheers!
Hehe, that is true. Cheers!!! 😃😃
The cooking looks so good, and coupled with some nice pints, what could be better! Are these considered "craft"? I am glad that you enjoyed them, even though the one was not as good as the other one! Cannot win them all, right? My overall judgement of craft lagers, or any lagers, in the South African scene is that generally spending extra money is not really worth it. They all taste so similar. Is this the case for you as well, or is there at least some lagers that you can justify the extra price? Enjoy!
These are craft beers, yes. "Premium domestic" are the standard mass produced beers you can get in North America - ex. Budweiser, Molsen, Coors, Corona, and so on. In my opinion those beers are pretty much undrinkable - haven't drank one in probably 6-10 years. Cheap ingredients, all of the added salts and sugars are nasty. It's like an instant hangover for me. Craft beers are more expensive, probably $0.20 - 1.30 CAD depending on the beer and the brand, but they are worth it to me. I don't drink all that much really, like 0-2 beers a week on average, maybe 5 beers on a heavy week.
It's pretty crazy the number of beers there are out there. I don't even try to keep up with them anymore. If I am out at a brewery I will try different things, but if I am at a store, I just stick to what I know.
That's fair. Tried and true is the safer route for sure. I get some duds every now and again and wish I would have just bought something that I know I like. I've even dumped a few down the drain that were nasty 😅😕
There's a lot of beers out there, like you said, and not all are good.
For sure! I've actually kind of switched and I do more whiskey than anything when I do drink these days.
Garlic chicken? Awww I eat this every day, so I can't take it anymore, this combination with carrots, onions and garlic, all baked in the oven, simply a delicacy, by the way, I would have added some red potatoes, a little rosemary, a few sprigs of thyme and maybe a bell pepper to this combination.
Those are good additions. I plan on planting rosemary in a pot this spring so I'll have some for cooking year round. I served it with mashed potatoes. They were yellow potatoes not red but still very similar.
A delicious dish and of course it's one of my favorites, I'm not a big fan of fancy dishes, but I'm a lover of simple but tasty dishes.
I remember the dishes my grandmother used to prepare for me just before I came home from school, a delight.
I'm nostalgic.
Have a great week ahead!
Dishes our grandmother's prepared are the best. I like traditional dishes as well.
We have a saying here in Romania, if you have grandparents cherish them, if not, buy them.
I'm still looking for those dishes with the taste of home, with the taste given by grandparents, but unfortunately I haven't found that anywhere in Romania, it seems that the world is changing quite fast.
When I'm in Ontario, I'll try to find Lakeside Kolsch to try... it seems like a good summer beer. At the moment, between snowstorms, I'm really enjoying NEIPA.
Your garlic chicken looks delicious 😋
Have a great Sunday
Cheers 🍻
Yeah check it out if you're in the region, it was a decent beer. For now enjoy the NEIPA! Cheers 🍻
Chicken with garlic is just wonderful -👌
!BEER
It turned out to be a pretty decent meal with the beer 🍺
This garlic chicken is what am even seeing and eyeing. So it's possible to prepare chicken without vegetable oil? I have learn something new from this post
That's great!
There are so many ways to cook chicken. Bake it in the oven, BBQ it, or in this case braise it in wine and broth.
