Summer Beer Reviews

in BEERlast year

Each week or so I buy an assortment of new beers to try for when I'm in the mood for something bubbly. I generally only drink one beer in a sitting, so they typically last me a little while. Here is this weeks collection.

Duchess Chocolate Cherry

20230709_160421~2.jpg

Company: Unknown
Style: Belgium Kreik
ABV: 6.8%

Marketing: European, French Renaissance style artwork.

Color: Cherry red with a light pink foam that dissipated quickly.

20230709_160440~2.jpg

Nose: perfumy, fruity and tart, with distinct milk chocolate undertones.

Taste: noticeably tart, some sweetness, tart cherry. Reminded me of a cider more than a beer.

Texture: sharply carbonated with a soft mouthfeel underneath.

Impression: all in all it was quite good but not my particular style of beer. The chocolate notes made it more interesting and more complex. I liked the nose more than the taste.

Longhorn Lager

20230709_161803~2.jpg

Company: Unknown (Farmers Creed?)
Style: Lager
Abv: 5%

Marketing: American ranch style artwork, Texan longhorn cattle. Farmers Creed writting on back which I thought was too long. I lost interest in it and still haven't finish reading it.

20230709_162411~2.jpg

Nose: lightly fruity aroma reminiscent of apriocot.

Taste: Malty yet bitter. Mild citrus notes.

Texture: Flat, lightly carbonated, velvety mouthfeel.

Impression: I didn't like it at first but it grew on me as I drank it. An okay beer, but mostly a bit plain. Nothing special. I probably wouldn't buy it again.

Blood Moon

20230720_161632~2.jpg

Company: Whitewater Brewing Co
Style: Sour beer
Abv: 4.8%
IBU: 4

Color: Golden straw colored with thin champagne like bubbles that dissipated quickly.

Nose: sweet, citrusy, perfume, potpourri.

Taste: Immediately tart in a way that made my cheeks ache. Sour, as the style suggests. Citrus notes. Tastes more like a cider or radler than a beer to me.

Texture: Sharp and crisp.

Impression: I didn't care for it and tried to pawn it off on my wife. Too much like a cider for me and I wasn't in the mood for that at the time. I could see it being good after a few bitter beers when you need to change it up a bit.

Common Loon

20230721_172218~2.jpg

Bobcaygeon Brewing Co
Style: Pale Ale
Abv: 4.6%
IBU: 36

20230721_173952~2.jpg

Marketing: Forest at night imagery brings cottage country to mind. Very common art style for summer beers in Canada. companies love to associate beer drinking with going to the cottage, obviously the two go hand in hand.

20230721_174006~2.jpg

Color: Golden yellow straw with a billowy white head. Ribbons of leftover foam around the glass. Looks extra good in the sunlight ;)

Nose: Citrus, specifically grapefruit, hoppy, grassy.

Taste: Dry with a strong long lasting bitter finish.

Texture: Light watery palat. Small bubbles.

Impression: I drank this one in the best place to drink beer at my home - the balcony. I can't remember if I liked it or not and didn't write it in my notes at the time. I was too busy with the photoshoot of the beer... I think it was decent. A bit hoppy for my taste but not over poweringly so.

Captains Log Lager

20230722_160452~2.jpg

Cameron's Brewing Company
Style: Golden Lager
Abv: 5%

Marketing: Simple cartoon image. High contrast pastel colors. Looks childish to me. Displaying a few annual rewards on back of can.

20230722_161452~2.jpg

Color: Golden yellow. Virtually no head. Looks like apple juice.

Nose: Bread

Taste: Sweet. Slight bitterness at the end. Bland overall. Very easy drinking.

Texture: Sharp bubbles. Watery mouthfeel.

20230722_160442.jpg

Overall I'd say that there is not a lot going on with this beer. It's pretty bland and boring to me. I would not buy again. But very easy to drink. The type of beer that could be served at a beer garden where you drink large quantities and don't really care what you're drinking.

Marco Polo

20230723_161142.jpg

Indie Ale House Co
Style: Italian Pilsner
ABV: 5%

Marketing: Luxury vibe, sort of high-end looking can, designer-like. My mind thinks - stereotypically Italian, or something.

20230723_161221.jpg

Color: Pale yellow with white billowy head that refused to dissipate, even after sitting for a few minutes. It likely contained a head stabilizer of some sort.

Nose: Grapfruit.

Taste: Citrusy grapefruit with a lasting bitter finish. There was a mild oxidized skunkiness to it, much like Corona, possibly from sitting too long (I'm unsure if this beer was imported. The skunkiness was fleeting though and I didn't notice it after the first few sips.

Texture: Light bubbles, watery palat.

Impression: It was okay but I would not bother to buy again. This is my own judgement but it seemed bougie to me.

Helles Lager

20230802_165242.jpg

Silversmith Brewing Co
Style: Golden Lager
ABV: 4.7%
IBU: 22

Marketing: Strange stained glass design reminiscent of a church. It probably has some sort of deep meaning for the company but I didn't care for it. It's not my style of art. Did not like the marketing.

20230802_165306.jpg

Color: Yellow Straw with an even white foam.

Nose: Hay with mild citrus in the background.

Taste: Malty, mildly sweet with a nice bitter finish. Fresh tasting.

Texture: Light bubbles over a full bodied velvety texture . Somewhat creamy mouthfeel.

Impression: Excellent beer. Refreshing. My perfect style for a lager. Malty and not overly hopped like most beers tend to be in North America (please enough with the IPA'S already). Perfect example of not judging something by its appearance.

Well thats it for this round of beers. There were a lot of duds this time and a few non-ordinary beers. Helles Lager was the winner for best beer in my opinion.

It's a long weekend in Canada right now, so I'll be on my way to get a new batch of beers for the days to come. Until then, cheers everyone!

Funking hell. That was a lot of beers. I do like a helles myself. Yum. Some of the names were quite funky, Loon... Captain's log, lol

Yeah the names are like that with breweries - funky names and funky labels and a lot of constant change as well. A lot of breweries will constantly produce new things for people to try. There is good and bad to that I suppose.

The Loon name is based on a water bird that is common to see near lakes. So it was sticking to the cottage country theme of the label.

Yeah, one of my favourite crazy brewers chairs up their like quite a lot but fortunately they rotate old favourites back in every now and then so you don't have to go without one you thought was amazing.

I thought the loon might be after the bird. My dad used to call my brother that, lol

Yeah it sucks when a good beer disappears on you 😕

Okay so you are familiar with the bird. I wonder where the whole "crazy as a loon" idea came from because the actual bird seems very calm, just floating on the water... 😆

Maybe they go mad in mating season! 😀

it's a good theory 😄

I generally only drink one beer in a sitting

Good boy!👏

Some interesting names there, like Common Loon.

I can't remember if I liked it or not and didn't write it in my notes at the time.

I guess you need to drink it again to refresh your memory:)

Yeah an interesting name that is keeping with the cottage life theme. You may already know this but a Loon is water bird that's very common in Northern Canada. They live around lakes so it's very common to see them when camping or cottaging.

No, I wasn't aware of those birds at all. I will look them up.👀😁

They have a distinct call that I love as well. They typically call very early in the morning

'Duchesse' bottle design looks to me simply irresistible! Good job, regards to designer, and some Hive !PIZZA to you, plus !DHEDGE as an extra.

Yeah I'm a sucker for marketing so when I see a bottle like that I have to try it. The beer itself wasn't my favorite. It was too sour for me. But it was interesting to try

First one looks very interesting but would definitely try them all ;)

Love your drinking style, I rarely drink more than one or two beers. :)

Everyone seems to be interested in the first one. It does sound very intriguing and has good marketing on the label. Lol

It probably looks better than it tastes. I prefer a good Lager or a Pale Ale sometimes.

Yeah it was very sour, so if you like sour beers then you would probably like it. I prefer lagers as well

A nice diverse mix of beers here of all shapes and sizes...

Common Loon would probably be most to my liking, a like a good Hoppy IPA 👌

Yeah? I'm not hige on hoppy beers or IPAs. Common Loon wasn't too hoppy but perhaps the hoppiest of the group. It was a decent beer 👍

I like this review so much, I would like to try Duchess Chocolate Cherry !

Me too, me too! 🤩🧐 !BEER

Thanks for the beer 😁

I'm glad you liked the review. The Duchess Cherry was so tart. It was a bit too much for me but I was very intrigued when I saw it at the store. I like the chocolate notes in the background.

Hey @norwaylife, here is a little bit of BEER from @qwerrie for you. Enjoy it!

We love your support by voting @detlev.witness on HIVE .

a world' favorite drink that causes a lot of high sugar levels and related-problems

Haha so I'm taking it that you're not a fan of beer?

OMG Chocolate cherry together, on a beer?! 2 of my favorite things with beer, I can’t even imagine how tasty it is!! I’ve tried Whitewater brand but not that flavor! I love your review!!

Glad you liked the review. The cherry beer was very tart/sour with just a hint of chocolate in the background - mostly just the smell. I wasn't a huge fan but it was interesting to try.

Duchess Chocolate Cherry , based on your description, it's something I would like to drink

That's funny, everyone really wants to try the Duchess Cherry.

I think I will prefer the one that has the malty beer taste
I love the fact that you explained what they tasted like so we should know what to expect when we buy them?

Yeah I like Malty beers as well. Yeah those are just some notes that I experienced from the beer so I can look back on them if needed or others can get an idea of the beer.

It's a nice collection, but you say you're not impressed by anything except Helles. Helles can be good, yes. Cheers!

Yeah it was a bunch of duds this time around. Too many sour beers I think. Helles was very good and Bobcaygeon Common Loon was also decent.

Duchess Chocolate Cherry My eyes were fixed on this beauty, I'm not much of a liquor drinker, but a beer once in a while is good. Many can drink a full case of beer in a few hours. In my country there is a place called Maracaibo, Zulia, in that place it is very hot and they drink beers to cool off, some of them cool off and others just get drunk. They get dizzy from drinking so much beer

Thanks for sharing this parade of beers @leaky20

Yeah that sounds similar to a lot of people here. I may have done that a few times when I was young too bit not in many many years 😆 😅

Do you prefer lager over ale? Also if you dont mind me asking. Where do you live? I dont think ive seen any of the beers youve mentioned here in the Philippines.

I generally prefer ales but that could just be because there are way more of them to choose from. I live in North America so I'm quite far from the Philippines. I doubt these beers would be imported around the world as a lot are from small breweries.

A good one post, what do you prefer a bear?

I generally like dark beers - stouts or Amber beers. I like malty beers opposed to hoppy ones.

I love the step by step reviews you made☺️

Thanks. Glad you liked it. 👍
