In every country, there are various kinds of beer influenced by culture and personal taste. In the Philippines, I would like to highlight some top-notch beers that are always in demand at bars, karaoke venues, and among the local crowd. Among the popular beer brands in the Philippines are San Miguel, Red Horse, and Pale Pilsen.
The Philippines' alcohol production has roots in its colonial history. San Miguel is the country's oldest brewery, founded in 1890.
Filipino people enjoy drinking beer at all times—early in the morning, at noon, and even at midnight. Drinking beer and hard liquor is a common part of everyday life for many Filipinos. They often indulge in these beverages during special occasions and celebrations such as birthdays, weddings, baptisms, wakes, reunions, and more. For some, daily drinking feels like an essential routine; they often express that they can't function without it. This practice serves not only as a way to unwind and relieve stress but also, as some would say, to remove the "abog sa lawas-Bisaya slang term"—which roughly translates to "dust from the body" in English.
Red Horse Beer is the first extra-strong beer brand in the Philippines, with an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 6.9%. Many people start by drinking Tanduay rum and then switch to Red Horse Beer, a practice they refer to as "washing" the Tanduay from their system (not to be confused with washing clothes or bathing). I’m not sure why they do this, but they say it helps them feel more tipsy.
In our supermarket, a variety of #beers, rum, and other alcoholic beverages are available for sale. They are neatly arranged on the shelves according to brand and variety.
I believe that Johnnie Walker Green Label is quite expensive, costing 490 HBD. However, those who enjoy Scotch whisky can choose from a variety of options, including the more affordable Black Label and Red Label.
Ginebra San Miguel is a type of gin that is popular among people living in mountainous areas near my home, primarily because it is affordable and can be consumed in smaller amounts. According to locals, the taste—though I have never tried it, as it doesn't appeal to me—features characteristics of juniper, which is a botanical plant. Some describe it as having a slight acetone flavor and a salty taste, with a chemical aftertaste. Interestingly, there is a basketball team in Philippines named Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, and it still exists today. While some people enjoy this drink, others do not.
These two beers are among my favorites because they have flavors reminiscent of lemon and apple. I often notice the apple flavor, particularly in the aftertaste, which also has a hint of beer. They are best served cold; I don’t enjoy the taste when they’re not chilled.
With an alcohol content of just 3%, I could drink six bottles, but I need to stay close to the bathroom since drinking a lot of beer means frequent trips to relieve myself! LOL. Many ladies love this beer because it’s smooth, and it often sells out at bars. It's commonly referred to as a "ladies' drink."
The bottle is really cold, just like the beer inside it. I’m using a wrench as a bottle opener, which was a thoughtful gift from a friend at Wuerth Philippines. I find the San Miguel Apple flavor to be exceptionally smooth and refreshing. Although I'm feeling thirsty, I'm limiting myself to just one bottle this time because I have some important tasks to complete. It's crucial to stay focused and avoid drinking too much, as that might make it challenging to manage my household chores later. So, here’s to enjoying my drink responsibly while getting things done! Cheers!
There is so much to discuss about beers in the Philippines, but for now, this is all I can share. See you in my next post!
This is #BeerSaturday week and I would like to invite @antonette to write a post in any language about beer with at least 3 pictures.
This is my #beer story for tonight, Thank you for dropping by! See ya!
We have the same favorite beer the San Miguel flavored apple beer. I really want to drink this because it's so delicious, especially when it's really cold. It really quenches your thirst and it's light too.
Yes, that is true. Thanks so much for dropping by.

That Red Horse looks like a beer I would love to taste one day. Some beers would have been existing for centuries, what keeps them in the market space is quality.
Cheers to more #beersaturday
