Beer Tasting: Thisted Limfjords Porter

in BEER4 days ago

Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

For the 380th #beersaturday, it's only fitting to try a different beer than usual. I'm following up on last week's post when I tried a Danish beer. This one is from those places, too. Actually, it happened earlier, right after my colleague and I arrived in Copenhagen by train from the airport.
And then, while my colleague was looking for a hotel, I saw a bar through the train station's door.

Here we go! Sure, it's on the way :)
I couldn't agree more, replied my colleague.
Of course, you get thirsty after two hours on a plane and half an hour on a train.
Well, at least me. And him, too.

🍻 😎 🍻

Thisted Limfjords Porter

Brewed by Thisted Bryghus, Thisted, Denmark.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 7.9% ABV, IBU 50.
It's Baltic Porter-style beer, dark brown with roasted malt and dark fruit flavors.

What do the Master Brewers say?

Came from Thisted Bryghus in 1989 after seven years of experimentation. The name comes from the Urban brewery in Aalborg, where the brewmaster from Thisted Bryghus “hit his stride” in the late 70s. It was here that he got his first taste of provincial life and this particular type of beer, which is often referred to in Thisted as the gentleman of beer. The name was bought after the Urban brewery closed in 1986.
The Limfjords-Porter “revolved” around the brewmaster until 1997, after which he felt he could no longer improve the product. The right blend of malts had been achieved. Unusual ingredients include smoked malt and English licorice, which together provide a flavor balance on a slightly higher level than is usually seen. The brewmaster's personal favorite and “child of the heart”.

🍺

The beer is dark, almost black, with little head but very creamy. It has a burnt smell. It goes down the throat smoothly, and I first taste the bitterness of roasted malt and smoke. There is also a taste of coffee, nuts, licorice, and prunes.
The bitter coffee flavor lingers in the aftertaste, and everything else disappears.

It's very drinkable and juicy. I very rarely drink porters, mainly because of the strong bitterness, but this one was quite OK. The bitterness was not as pronounced as I expected, balanced by the sweetness of the dried fruit, with some nuts alongside.
Please, I would love another one :)

🍻 😎 🍻

And what am I listening to as I write this? Something from my yesterday's #newtunes post. Very melancholic.

I had to take a look as I don't often see reviews of beers from my native Denmark!

Although it has been a few years since I last made it back there, it seems there is a growing number of quite good craft brews coming along.

I don't know that many, but most of the Danish beers I've tasted have been very good. 🍻 !BEER

Man I really enjoy some of the higher ABV porters but they are few and far between over here. Some of my fondest beer memories come from overseas and this post makes me think it has been far too long since my last one! I might have to search out some Danish beer and see if I can find anything besides Tuborg!

I was astonished. They have a lot of craft breweries. What do you think about that?
