Happy St Andrew's Day 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I am sure if you were on the google browser today November 30th you might have seen ...

that is my browser, we have a Scottish overload!

Ironically although it is our patron Saint and national day, Burn's night in January to celebrate the amazing poet and all round scoundrel Rabbie Burns is much more celebrated!

However it is Christmas time and our local pub has loads of specials going on ....

Unfortunately most of them were settling in the cellar so I turned to something that was on tap and I had not had for a long time!

The beer was an IPA, it seems weird that IPA has had such a revival. It is a wonder it is used in these woke times!

So yes it is meant to be extra hoppy and strong as was the original intent of IPAs.

Today's Beer for this #BeerSaturday is Marston's Old Empire

You probably know I like dark beers and generally not a fan of fizzy lagers!

So Old Empire is not a dark beer!

But ... and stay with me, it is not a lager either...

It also went damn fine with food!

This was the second time this week I had been to our local Wetherspoons, the other time being for their turkey. Afterall you have to have turkey on Thanksgiving Day right?

So it was a delicious hunk of festive chicken with the trimmings..

You can tell it is Christmas with those big golden balls!

Of course it got drunk too fast and a second was duly ordered.

That is one great thing with these apps is that you can order another beer without even leaving your seat!

I have no idea what food the beer goes with, I tend to find all these things quite personal.

I mean if I want a pint of Guinness with egg and cress sandwich then I would for example!

Bam this beer went down well....

What about the Stats....

Marston's Old Empire IPA is a strong pale ale with a fascinating history rooted in the 19th century and the British Empire.

Old Empire is a classic example of an IPA, a style that emerged in the 1800s. Brewers in Burton upon Trent, England (where Marston's is located) were known for their IPAs. These beers were heavily hopped and higher in alcohol, both of which acted as preservatives for the long sea voyage to British troops and expatriates in India...

Note that Gemini helped out with this as the Marston's site was pish poor!

Key Characteristics of Old Empire:

Strong: An ABV of 5.7%, higher than many standard beers.
Hoppy: It has a distinctive hoppy aroma and flavour, with earthy, herbal, and floral notes.
Bitter: The high hop content gives it a characteristic bitterness.
Pale: It has a pale golden colour.

My Verdict

I enjoyed it and would have again with or without food!

Posting about a beer on a Saturday on the Beer Community ....

It's a whole bunch of fun, so check out The #BeerSaturday Challenge - Week 387 from the one and only @detlev.

This #BeerSaturday week I would like to invite @coquicoin to share a brthday beer she might be having with us in Bogotá🍻

Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!

Good job Ed. Happy St Andrews Day. It looks like the landlord has you well covered at Weather spoons and at £1,99 a pint, you can't go wrong. I didn't usually go to weather spoons for a roast back in the day, it was usually to a Toby's Carvery. I did take on their burgers though and they had some other good food options too including chocolate cake. Although I have seen May from Top Gear is running a pub now, so they might have some competition.

It looks good. I am not really a fan of IPA's though, they taste too much like pine needles or gin to me. I prefer darker beers this time of year. Give me a Kilian's or Guinness over an IPA any day.

The food looks so inviting mate...

Lovely 😍

Hayyy, now I am starving seeing those burgers and fries!

Its better to take beer with foods so you don't get drunk😌

I love the 12 Ales of Christmas menu that would be a hard one to choose from. Glad to see you enjoyed the Ale you had with that scrumptious-looking chicken sandwich. I would love to go to Scotland some day as it has always been one of those destinations that you just feel you have to experience. ♥

That looks great! I bet it was good right along with that beer! Very cool!

Wow, that 12 ales are rather cheap, aren't they? Most craft brews are at least twice as much in the UK, right?

What a Christmas miracle :))
