Sinulog is the biggest festival in the province of Cebu, Philippines. Not only is it celebrated in Cebu City but also on the other neighboring municipalities. Last Sunday, Brgy. Ilihan, a small brgy in the municipality of Tabogon, northern Cebu, Philippines, held it’s annual ”Sinulog sa Ilihan.

Sinulog is a way to thank our beloved Sr. Stop Niño for all the blessings we received all-year long. All Roman Catholics celebrate it during the month of January.

Dressed in a Mama Mary-inspired costume is our cousin, who is our festival queen. She is graced to dance and hold the Sto.Niño while she waves it in front of the crowd.

Here are some snippets while they were waiting for the que for them to get in the covered court. There were free snacks for the dancers outside. They also offered a prayer before they went in.

Before the actual dance performance is the ritual showdown. The boy in red t-shirt holding a chicken is my son. The main reason why I decided to show up this day. He wanted to show me his performance.

This is also one thing I want to highlight, ”the importance of always showing up”. As parents, we have to make sure to be present at all events our child has. It helps boost their self-confidence and self-esteem knowing that we take time to appreciate what they do. It may be such a small gesture, but for the children, it already is a big thing. Showing up always matter.

They may not have the most prestigious costumes compared to the other performers, but I can truly say their performance would really compete to those winning teams.

Everyone danced gracefully accompanied with a beautiful smile on their faces. They were all pleasant to see. From the ritual performance until then end of the dance was all so well-executed.

The over-all performance of the team was a result of team work and dedication. It is heart-warming to see these dancers cooperated as they practiced daily, none of this would happen if we do not have supportive family members, members of the community, and members of the entire performance team.
