Embracing Foodventures: Harvesting Bamboo Shoots in a Peaceful Countryside

in Hive PH6 months ago
I was just on the swing, scrolling on my phone, when my cousin approached me and again invited me to do something. Yes, again, because every time I'm in the province, she will always take me with her when she has somewhere to go. Each time when we have nothing to do at home, we would instantly think of looking for something to cook, something to eat. Now, something else came up on her mind, and that is we'll be getting some bamboo shoots!

I, of course, nodded because it's definitely a great idea, rather than just me sitting there doing absolutely nothing. It's our usual routine together in the province, looking for something to eat, something we could have as a viand for the next meal. Interesting, isn't it? What we usually get are banana blossoms, and honestly, never have I ever experienced getting bamboo shoots on my own, or even with my cousin, so the idea itself truly excites me.

So that's it. She was all prepared, wearing pants and a hoodie, while I was in my sleeveless shirt and shorts. That's why she told me to get changed HAHAHAHA. This cousin of mine is actually my go-to cousin. We both love adventures, and this is our own kind of adventure. Without further ado, here we are!

My cousin did the lead. She's always braver and tougher than me though. I am just her little soldier. I told her that she gets the bamboo shoots while I serve as her lookout. I was so conscious of the surroundings because my overthinking self can't stop contemplating what if there'll be snakes. Safety first, of course. The idea alone of getting bamboo shoots is fantastic, but the process is not. But, it's fun anyways!

Here's the first bamboo shoot we got!
My cousin got this one. What we're talking about during this time is why does it seem so easy looking at others do it when it's actually not. I mean you would really have a hard time, especially if the bamboo shoots are placed in a quite challenging spot.

Then, we went to another bamboo tree, and again we saw more bamboo shoots. I told my cousin that I'll be getting it myself.

After a few minutes, charannnn here's what I got! We were both laughing, and I was super proud of myself at this moment.

We collected more bamboo shoots, and hey, let me just share with you the easiest piece! Hahahaha, here it is, this was probably the most effortless of all bamboo shoots.

We sought and got more bamboo shoots. When we had collected enough, we then headed home. We were a little bit exhausted from what we've done, but it was overridden by contentment upon seeing everything we obtained. We had a fun time together, I told you, this is our kind of adventure, so I guess we can now call this a foodventure? HAHAHAHAHA. By the way, here's all that we got.

I, with my enthusiastic cousin, automatically peeled the bamboo shoots' layered skin off and cut off the hard parts. We also sliced it thin.

After that, I was told to put an amount of salt on it and rinse it four times to remove the bitterness of the freshly picked bamboo shoots. That's all I did, and my brother's wife did the rest. We decided to cook it at our cousin's house.

So overall, that's how things work here in the province. We would instantly think of something new, specifically like with a common goal, and that is FOODVENTURE.

This is one thing that's actually advantageous living in the countryside; when you have nothing to do, you can just find fun around, and when you seek something to eat, you can just find it around too. It just takes some zeal. Nonetheless, I had a great time with a highly nutritious meal. Thanks for reading, dearest Hivers! (✿ ♡‿♡)

Love that food❤️

Have you tried eating it too? It's absolutely delicious! 🥹

Oh, I miss bamboo shoots 🤤. In our province we usually add this to our soups. We also call it labong in our local dialect

Good to know that, sir @cli4d! I agree, making a soup of bamboo shoots is indeed yummy, especially when added with some leafy veggies. In our dialect, we call it dabong as well. 😅

Haven't tried eating foods like that but it's looks delicious.

Maybe you could try it sometime soon. ☺️

You made it great.
Quite familiar with the soup styles, and the smell. So good. :D

Thanks for that! 🫶

That's delicious, I have tried that several times!❤️✨

Not just delicious, but also nutritious! 🤤😂

I love Dabong Ma'am @jeannmazing especially in utan bisaya.

Glad to hear that, ma'am @diamondinthesky! Me too🫶

Here in Zambales we often use bamboo shoots in cooking, it is better together with saluyot and fried fish.

I totally agree, miss @missellimac! Bamboo shoots added with saluyot is top tier. 🫶

Those bamboo shots make a great filling for lumpia!

We honestly haven't tried it as a lumpia filling, only fried or in soup. That sounds like a good idea though! 🤯

Kalami sa dabong!

Tinood jud ma'am, samot na if utanon. 🤤

Wow, those bamboos shoots look so scrumptous. Good thing that you harvested a lot. In our town, we already run out of that.
