Happy Wednesday Hivers!
I have already mentioned in my previous blogs that our house in the countryside is close to the coastal area. Growing up in such an environment was a blessing, as I have so many great memories at the beach. I constantly witnessed both the stunning sunrise in the morning and the jaw-dropping sight of the sunsets on the horizon during late afternoon. It was truly nostalgic.
Since our house is just near the coastline, collecting seashells was one of my favorite hobbies during my childhood days. I placed some of my collections in my mother's garden, decorating it with seashells. In my innocent mind, they added beauty to her flower garden.
Although I was exposed to seashells during my childhood, I haven't seen all the seashells there are. There are still many that I haven't encountered. Today, I will be sharing with you the Shell Museum that I visited a few weeks ago in Panglao, Bohol.
The Nova Shell Museum is located in Panglao proper. Compared to other museums, this museum is relatively small. They collected a PHP 100.00 entrance fee. I never had a chance to talk to any of their staff or to see or read about the history of it, so I don't know when this museum started.
They showcased a wide variety of seashells, and I am familiar with a few of them. Some of those are my favorites.
This seashell is called 'saang' in the Visayan dialect. Many people love to eat its meat as it has a delicious taste. It is already expensive when bought in the city, but in the countryside, you can have it for free as long as you have the patience to hunt for seashells.
I have already forgotten some of the names of these seashells, but they also have a delicious taste.
I remember when I was a child, I didn't like this type of seashell. We called it 'taktakon.' I was not happy every time I saw this during seashell hunting because it has a bitter taste, but my mother loves it.
There are many types of seashells displayed at the museum, ranging in size from big ones to very tiny ones, some of which require the use of a microscope to see their appearance clearly.
They have also displayed corals.
A smile was painted on my face as I reached this area. They have placed a statue of a mermaid here. When I was a child, I kept asking my mother if mermaids really exist. She just answered, 'I've never seen one in my life.' Hmm, is it just through human imagination, or do they really exist but have never shown themselves to humans? I still wonder about this.
As I continued wandering, this huge seashell caught my attention. That was my first time seeing this type of seashell, and I wondered if its meat can be eaten and what its taste might be. There was no name on it, so I was not able to know its name.
I think this museum is relatively new because they still have many displayed seashells without names. Overall, it's nice, as one has the chance to see different types of seashells, but it may need to have names on them for additional information.
Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
