A Day of Warmth and Giving at Bacolod City College

in Hive PH9 months ago

The morning air was slightly crisp as I walked towards Bacolod City College, my heart pounding with a mixture of excitement and nerves. Today was not just any ordinary day. It was Kiwanis Giving Day, a day earmarked for spreading joy and kindness within our community. Tucked under my arm were large containers filled with steaming arroz caldo and baskets of freshly baked bread, my humble contributions to this event.

As a member of the Kiwanis Club, I've always looked forward to occasions where we could make a tangible difference in people's lives, and today was one of those special moments. Our mission was simple but impactful: to provide a hearty meal to the students of Bacolod City College, a gesture aimed at not only alleviating hunger but also bringing a sense of warmth and belonging.

Stepping into the college grounds, I could see the setup was already underway. Tables draped in vibrant cloths were being arranged, and volunteers buzzed around, each performing their tasks with a smile. The aroma of arroz caldo filled the air, mingling with the smell of baking bread from my own stash, creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

As students started to trickle in, their curious gazes quickly turned into bright smiles upon realizing what was unfolding before them. I took my position behind the serving table, ladle in hand, ready to serve. The first student in line approached, shyly. Good morning, I greeted, my voice carrying a warmth I hoped would set the tone for this exchange. I hope you enjoy this meal we've prepared for you.

Setting up our makeshift distribution area, we ensured everything was in place — the steaming pots of arroz caldo, baskets filled with soft, warm bread, and our hearts ready to serve and uplift spirits. As we began to serve the students, the air filled with thanks and smiles that could brighten even the gloomiest days. Each ladle of arroz caldo poured into bowls was more than just a meal; it symbolized hope and the warmth of community.

What's the occasion? asked a young student, her eyes reflecting genuine curiosity.

It's Kiwanis Giving Day, I responded with a smile. It's our way of giving back to the community, to let you know that you're not alone, and there are people who care.

Serving the arroz caldo, I watched as the student's eyes lit up, the steam from the bowl warming his face. Thank you so much, he said, genuine gratitude in his voice. That simple expression of thanks filled my heart with joy, reinforcing why we, as Kiwanis members, dedicate ourselves to service.

The impact of those simple words and the meal shared was palpable. Conversations began to flow, stories were shared, and for a moment, the burdens seemed lighter. This was the power of community action, the very essence of Kiwanis Club's mission — to bring about positive change through serving others.

Throughout the morning, the scene before me was one of communal joy and gratitude. Students sat together, enjoying their meals, their laughter and chatter a melody that underscored the significance of our mission. We were not just feeding bodies; we were nourishing souls, fostering a sense of community and support that would hopefully linger far beyond this day.

Each thank you I received was a reminder of the power of giving, of how simple acts of kindness can ripple through a community, weaving threads of connection and empathy. As the day wound down, and the last of the arroz caldo was served, a sense of accomplishment settled over me. We had set out to make a difference, however small, and the smiling faces and full stomachs around me were proof that we had succeeded.

As I packed up to leave, the gratitude and warmth I received from the students of Bacolod City College were imprinted in my heart. Today was a testament to the fact that giving, in any form, can brighten lives. And as the sun set on this memorable Kiwanis Giving Day, I knew that these moments of connection and generosity were what truly made life rich and fulfilling.
