Baguio City, situated in the mountainous Cordillera region of the Philippines, is renowned for its cool temperature and spectacular surroundings. I , for one, was amazed by its charm. Well, it has been a well-liked vacation spot for locals and tourists from abroad who are seeking a break away from the scorching temperatures and pollution that takes place in most places around the country. Once you're here, it definitely feels like you're in a different place where nice weather and breathtaking sceneries fused.
From the 18th to the 20th of January this year, my co-JPIAns and I had the chance to visit Baguio for academic and non-academic contests in line with the Regional Mid-year Convention (RMYC) spearheaded by the National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants Region 1 and Cordillera Administrative Region (NFJPIA-R1CAR). Along the way, I really felt excited. When we were finally there, it felt like a breath of fresh air, despite it not being my first time going there. The city's cold breeze and cozy ambiance make me feel comfortable and at ease, allowing me to focus and have fun.
RMYC, the event we joined in Baguio, is an avenue for us, accountancy students, aiming to develop our skills and knowledge in the field through healthy competition such as this. Each of the participants had a spirit of competitiveness deep within them, and it surely emerged during the convention, but what prevailed was the feeling of gaining something new, seizing the moment, and encountering new friends.
Aside from the convention itself, Baguio provided the ideal setting for bonding moments with my fellow JPIAns. We called ourselves the "late-night pips" because we consecutively aimed to see the night market even at a late hour. Ironic as it may seem, but even though we were not able to really see the night market, the priceless moments we had on such a journey were incomparable. After all, It was a fun way to unwind after a day of intense competition.
Since we were at Baguio already, we did not miss the chance to visit popular tourist spots like Burnham Park, where we took photos, selfies, and groufies. We also indulged in some mouthwatering foods that every one of us surely enjoyed.
Going back to the event, each was so intense and exhausting yet fun as well. In the academic contest we joined, my team and I were fortunate enough to win a spot. It was joyous when the others also secured spots. But even for those who did not make it, the experience was still worthwhile and to be treasured. What matters most is the experience and knowledge that were imparted to us, as well as the connections that were built along the journey. With that, everyone was already a winner. Here are some random pics...
Aside from the academic and non-academic contests, one of the highlights of the RMYC experience this year was the Ambassadors of Goodwill (AOG) pageant. The AOG pageant is a popular event during the convention, which showcased the beauty, talent, and personality of the contestants.
We really cheered for our representatives. They certainly did not disappoint, impressing the judges and the audience with their elegance and confidence. Our voices may have been tired from all the applause, but it was a compelling and proud moment when both of our representatives were declared the winners.
Further, aside from the exhilarating events and competitions, another thing that stood out during our stay in Baguio was the food. Well, Baguio is really known for its fresh produce and delicious cuisine, and we certainly had our fill of local specialties. From the sumptuous meals to the fresh and tasty desserts served at the hotel, we never felt famished during our stay. It was a gastronomic experience, and we relished every bite.
During the awarding ceremony at the convention, everyone was cheering for their school and representatives. Everyone's heart is pounding, more so mine. The students who bagged spots in various academic and non-academic contests were called one by one. When the academic event we joined was mentioned, my team and I were delighted when we were hailed as the first runner-up.
More awards were announced, and at the end of the ceremony, our school was hailed as the most active local chapter of JPIA in Region 1 and CAR this year, and we attained the overall champion title. It was one of the proudest moments I have ever experienced, and for all of us as a whole, knowing that our hard work and determination paid off.
Before we left Baguio, we bought pasalubong and souvenirs like the famous strawberries, jams, and peanut butter. It was an excellent way to wrap up our voyage and bring home a piece of Baguio with us-something that would always remind us of the extraordinary experiences we had.
Baguio City may be a popular tourist destination, but for every dreamer building their dreams, it is a breathing space for growth, learning, and rapport. The cool climate and comfy ambiance make it an ideal place to concentrate on our goals and unite with like-minded people. It may come to an end, but I am looking forward to returning to Baguio soon and experiencing its trance again.
Since we won in the region, we are advancing on the national stage, particularly in Cebu. It will be soon. Hopefully, the stars will align again, and we can bring pride to our school once more.
