Philippine Polymer Banknote Series: An Ordinary Citizen's Point of View

What are your thoughts on the newly released polymer banknote series of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the Philippines)?

Hello, dear Hivers, welcome to another blog series featuring the recently released polymer banknotes series of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Come join me, and together let's discuss our insights regarding this matter.

Just recently, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the Philippines) released another sequel to the polymer banknote series following the first release of the one thousand peso bill polymer banknote in 2022. It includes the unveiling of the five hundred, one hundred, and fifty peso bill polymer banknote designs. The release draws several flocks from famous personalities and even commoners. The issue stems from removing the heroes and past Philippine presidents from the official banknotes recently released. Some even questioned the necessity of changing the design, citing that national heroes should be recognized over animals.

Moreover, another tons of concerns has been raised; one issue is the proper handling of the polymer banknote, because unlike the old paper bill folding the polymer might make it prone from ripping; another one is that according to former senator Bam Aquino, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas have to reason out why they decide to remove the the image of Philippine heroes and former presidents. He further stressed out that they (removed figures) are Filipinos worthy of emulating and should not be subjected to removal from the current banknote. On the other hand, the Bangko Central ng Pilipinas reiterated that they will not remove the old bills from the circulation, it will coexist together with the new polymer banknotes. They further stressed that the new series of polymer banknotes is a smarter, cleaner, and stronger move to reducing the carbon footprints.

In my opinon, removing the images of our national heroes and past presidents in the new polymer banknote doesn't mean disregarding their sacrifices and efforts made for the motherland. I whole heartedly respect the figures feautured on our bills, and as much as we wanted to preserve their efforts we also wanted to showcase the Philippine biodiversity through our banknotes. With the assurance of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the old banknote will continue to exist alongside the new polymer banknotes, there's nothing to worry about this. For some this is politically motivated, but for me this is purely innovation. How about you, what is your take on this issue? Comment your insights below, I would love to read your ideas.

That's an interesting take! For me, these polymer notes are harder to fake, which is a big pro for security and prevention of fraud. Based on my work, I can say these polymer notes are really great, but you're right that they need extra care, as they can be prone to creasing or tearing if mishandled. Not just that, but when these polymer notes are folded, it's so hard to flatten them back again, honestly 😭😭. They become so difficult to make plain and flat again. But yeahhh, on the bright side, polymer notes are also more durable and resistant to water compared to paper notes, which is a huge advantage in everyday use. All of us just need proper education on handling these notes so that we can preserve their quality over time.

Anyways, I think there's nothing bad at all about replacing or, should I say, removing rather the national heroes in the polymer notes, because after all, the new design showcases our biodiversity, and it's honoring our natural treasures. It's actually understandable, but as for me, perhaps a good balance would do, ate Marf. So, okayyyy ra since in circulation man gihapon ang old banknotes.

For me it's okay since they will still circulate the old money and as you just said it's also nice to showcase our biodiversity to our bills. Though this topic will split the opinions of people those who are okay with and those who dont.

Thank you for your thoughts maam @evitadiss, I totally agree with your statement that aside from featuring our heroes on our banknotes, why not also feature our biodiversity.💗✨😌

I'm fine with the change, but I hope they also redesign the coins. Many Filipinos, myself included, still get confused between the 1, 5, and 10 peso coins. I can only imagine how challenging it must be for older jeepney drivers, especially at night or when they're in a rush.

Thank you for your thoughts @lizhavesomefun, you're right; even myself find hard to distinguish 1-5-10 peso coins.😌

it's okay for me, pwede ra pilo2on ang old money? HAHAHAH

Thank you for your thoughts @marieyanlab, ok raman cguro pero dilsng kaayo pslabian kay prone gyapon cya sa tearing.✨

I think the Philippine coins are the ones that are needing for a change. A lot of people especially public transportation drivers struggles in identifying the differences of 1 , 5 and 10 pesos.

Thank you for your thoughts @nanaspeaks, I totally agree with you. As what @lizhavesomefun said old drivers find it hard to distinguish 1-5-10 peso coins, that's why I also think thse coins should be the one that needs redesign.😌✨

Not a problem. The real problem is that the money doesn't always get used for the welfare of the people. !BBH !LOLZ !PIZZA

Thank you for your thoughts @day1001, I agree with you hahah. The ancient problem no one has solve.😔

How about you @milesinverse, what are your thoughts?😅

The recent changes in Philippine money are quite interesting to me. It’s fascinating to see how these updates reflect the country’s efforts to modernize and improve its financial system. I’m curious to see how it will impact everyday transactions and how Filipinos will adapt to these changes.
