Hello, Hivers! How are you doing? Anyway, come and let's have a momentary wander in the Plaza Independencia's lush greenery and rich history.

Plaza Independencia is the perfect park to go to if you are looking for a place to spend leisure time with your friends or family, sightseeing, and picture taking. This place does not only have a good ambiance, but it also well as rich history in Cebu, Philippines.

Located in downtown Cebu City near the tourist spots of the city, it is accessible and an open space to tourists and even locals. After a tiring errand from the town last week, we have decided to take a short rest in the plaza— away from the hustling and bustling city. The trees, the grass, and the lush greeneries added ambiance to the place.

The plaza does not only give a good ambiance but also historical memorials of the Philippines. If you go deeper, the plaza has witnessed a lot throughout the development of Cebu and has undergone a lot of change in naming the plaza until the present.

This exact spot played an important role in the history of us locals. Just like its name "Plaza Independencia" it portrays the independence and freedom of the Filipinos against the conquerors.

This was originally called Plaza de Armas in 1600 where it was used as a military training ground. It was named more than once until the Philippines finally regained its freedom and interdependence from the invaders or colonizers and it was named the Plaza Independencia.

Historical monuments are built here, one of which is the Cebu Veteran's Memorial. The monument's V-shaped structure is like an eloquent two hands reaching for heaven. This stands for those courageous Cebuano militaries who'd done noble deeds for the country.

In addition, I would like to mention the following important landmarks (which I was unable to photograph): Statues of National Hero Andres Bonifacio and the Late Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay; an obelisk for Miguel Lopez de Legaspi; and a monument in memory of victims of Filipino-Japanese war.

In a metaphoric adornment of spaces, this particular area featured in the plaza is the reality of aesthetic ambianxe by reminding us about Martial Law period – an era that should rank among the darkest in Philippine history specifically during the decade from 1970-1980.

The city's pride— a historical park and the oldest military structure in Cebu. Canons and bunkers that were used by the military in the past are now merely for display. Sadly, we could not explore inside during our visit because we were only passing through and standing in queue with visitors is time-consuming.

Over here is the spacious playground beside Fort San Pedro. This is perfect for a family day bonding, picnics with friends, and many more recreational activities.

Overall, a simple stroll here will help a person— whether a local or a tourist appreciate the importance of it in the history of the Philippines, specifically Cebu.
