Parol: A Symbol that embodies the Spirit of Christmas

in Hive PH8 days ago

It's time! Merry Christmas everyone! Before this year ends, I am to write again about the craft I made for this christmas. With Christmas season in the air, it's a must and it has been a tradition to Filipinos to have the decorations which brings out the spirit of December.

It was tasked to us last week to have an individual parol project. For those who don't know what a parol is, it is a star shaped lantern which comes from the Spanish word "Farol". This star can be made using different materials, and we were tasked to make it using indigenous local materials.

Bamboo tree, ginit (brown fiber found in the coconut palm), and pakpak (corn wing) were the materials mainly used in this project. But I would like to emphasize here that I couldn't have done this star perfectly without the help of my father.

I opted to make a star from bamboo alone but there were mistakes made. I wanted to repeat it but my father insisted that he would do it, I didn't resist because I needed the project to be perfectly done. Besides, that week was our finals week so I was thankful I get to have the time to study for it.

After my father finished the skeleton of the star I wasted no time and began to put the ginit first. I pasted it along the bamboo lines using a glue stick and a glue. I thought at first, that it would not be time-consuming but it took me half a day to finish it all. The work in pasting the ginit alone was exhausting but fun at the same time.

After pasting all the ginit in the star, it took me a while to decide what I should do with the pakpak. I decided to form it before placing and pasting it in the moon shaped bamboo. It took me about an hour before placing it completely.

After covering the whole star and the moon shaped beside it, I furnished it and added a solar powered christmas lights to bring some more spirit and life to it. I also made a small ‘belen’ which is a traditional Christmas symbol in the Philippines that depicts the birth of Jesus Christ. I printed out the background and used a real cement statue of the infant Jesus Christ.
