Annyeonghaseyo chingu (Hello friends), Maya is here again. Have you already read my last blog? if not, you can visit my recently post.
Today's blog is about the place where I am right now, a place where I grow up. As what I have mentioned in my introduction I live in the small town called Murcia. Now let me tell you a short history about my home town and let me tour to you the home of Tinabuay Festival.
Murcia is a municipality located in the province of Negros Occidental in the Philippines. It was established on January 16, 1846, by virtue of a royal decree issued by the Spanish government during the colonial period. The Municipality of Murcia is a first class Municipality having a land area of 28,455 hectares and consisting of 23 Barangays.
Murcia originally a part of Bacolod, Murcia became an independent municipality due to its growing population and economic importance. The town was named after a city in Spain, possibly to honor Spanish origins or settlers.
Throughout its history, Murcia has primarily been an agricultural area, known for its vast sugarcane plantations and rice fields. The fertile lands and favorable climate have contributed to the town's prosperity and development.
Immaculate Conception Parish
The Augustinian Recollects evangelized Murcia as early as 1856, through Fr. Juan Miro, OAR, established the church in 1860. Juan Miguel Alvarez, OAR, was the matriz of several local churches, including Granada, Alegria, and Kumaliskis.
Fr. Alvarez did not meet the same fate as other Spanish religious leaders during the Philippine Revolution in 1898. However, the Recollects had to abandon their mission in Murcia and were able to resume after the revolution. Fr. Jacinto Alberdi initiated church-building work but it was disrupted by World War II.
